City’s Uma sets new meet record

City’s upcoming athlete P.S. Uma of DYES, Mysore and a Ist Year B.Com student of Teresian FGC, Mysore, taking part in the Karnataka State Junior and Senior Athletic Championships 2014 at the Sree Kanteerava Stadium, Bangalore, hogged the limelight in the girls under-20 section by throwing the shot put to a new meet record distance of 13.03 mts on Thursday.
Uma coached by Vasanth at the DYES, Mysore, went passed the meet record of 12.47 meters set by T.P. Preeti in 1993.
Uma’s previous laurels include a gold medal in Rural Nationals held in Kolkata in the year 2012-13 and a second place finish in the Pre-University Nationals in Ranchi in February, this year.
In the men’s high jump, Supreeth Raj of Dakshina Kannada emerged winner, clearing 2.10 metres. The 25-year-old Bopanna clocked 10.40 seconds to emerge victorious in the men’s 100 mts sprint while Padmini powered to victory in the 100 mts sprint in the women’s section with a time of 12.00 seconds, warding off a stiff challenge from Bhuvi Shankar of Alva’s, who finished 0.2 seconds behind for the silver.
V. Priyanka of DYES, Mysore secured the silver medal in the 800 mts in the girls U-20 section. In the men’s High Jump, Mysore District’s T.S. Ravi secured the bronze clearing a height of 1.75 mts.
