An anatomy professor has chosen a unique way of educating people about the need to donate bodies as well as ways to preserve them.
Dr N M Shama Sundar of JSS Medical College has preserved his mother’s body in the anatomy lab ever since she passed away five years ago. Now, he has preserved his sister’s body too. His sister, N M Nagamani (74), a
retired KSRTC employee, died some months ago, and her body now lies in an adjacent room. Sundar has used a method called plastination to preserve the bodies longer. Plastination is a technique of tissue preservation developed by Dr Gunther von Hagens in Heidelberg, Germany, in 1977.
Sundar, who is also secretary of the JSS Body Donation Association, said Nagamani and other members of his family had donated their bodies to research.
He said preserving the bodies also allowed his relatives settled abroad who could not come to India at the time of his mother’s death to later “see her”. One of Sundar’s brothers, who lives in Australia, flew down two months after the death and saw his mother’s body.
Murali Mohan, another of Sundar’s brothers and a retired deputy chief engineer at Kolar gold mines, said he visits the lab whenever he feels like seeing his mother and sister.
Six of Sundar’s nephews and nieces who live abroad could not make it when his mother died. They came after many months, he said.
The Brahmin family did not perform any death rites for the two bodies. “My mother was against religious rituals,” Sundar told Express.
He said the proximity of two bodies of close relatives does not affect his work in the lab. He said his gesture had inspired several others to pledge their bodies.

“The KSGH Music and Performing Arts University which is engaged in teaching and research, should get all help from the government in order to become a model University of its kind to the entire country,’ observed senior litterateur Dr. Dejagow.
He was speaking after inaugurating the ‘Bharatiya Nrutya Vaibhava’, a six-day dance fest organised by the KSGH Music University at Ganabharati Veene Seshanna Bhavan, Kuvempunagar in the city yesterday.
Stating that he is a serious music and dance enthusiast, Dejagow said that the art of dance has attained new dimensions with the passage of time.
Noting that Bharatanatyam form of dance has gained much popularity in South India, he observed that music, arts and art appreciation play a vital role in maintaining the health of the society.
Renowned danseuse Usha Datar in her address, complimented the University for organising the programme featuring both music and dance, especially at a time when the general perception is that music and dance forms are always at the opposite ends.
Regretting the declining number of those learning music and dance, especially the classical form of music, she said that music exams being hitherto conducted by the Higher Secondary Board, will now be conducted by the Music Varsity and suggested the Music Varsity to hold the exams in May instead of October, in the larger interest of students.
The University Registrar Prof. Y.S. Siddegowda highlighted the role of Dr. Dejagow in the setting up of Music Varsity in Mysuru and said that the University will think of naming its proposed extension block at Varakudu in the taluk after Dejagow.
Litterateur Dr. Dejagow and danseuse Usha Datar were felicitated on the occasion.
Music University VC Dr. Sarvamangala Shankar presided. Music Varsity Registrars and others were present.

Asha Bhat, the second runner-up at the finals of the Miss Diva Universe-2014, who proved that success in beauty pageants is not the hegemony of those born and brought up in metropolitan cititis, had been to her hometown Bhadravati on Sunday.
Representatives of various organisations had organised a programme to felicitate Ms. Bhat at the Nayana Convention Hall in Bhadravati.
Interacting with presspersons on the occasion, she said that with hard work and commitment, even girls from rural areas and mofussil centres could also succeed in beauty competitions.
Ms. Bhat is the daughter of Subrahmanya Bhat and Shyamala Bhat, who run a clinical laboratory at Bhadravati. She studied up to 10th standard at St. Charles School here and pursued her Pre-University Course at Alva’s College, Moodbidri. She is pursuing seventh semester of BE at R.V. College in Bangalore at present.
Ms. Bhat, who had enrolled for National Cadet Corps while studying PUC, was selected to participate in the Republic Day parade. She was also a member of the NCC delegation from SAARC nations that visited Sri Lanka. “The stint with NCC instilled confidence in me to face new challenges,” she said.
According to Ms. Bhatm, preparing for beauty pageants was a rigorous exercise. Balanced diet and regular fitness sessions were part of the peparations. There would be training sessions on mannerisms, etiquette and communication skills. “While in NCC, I used to enjoy participating in parades. The catwalk on ramp is all together a different experience. Initially, I experienced pain with high-heeled foot wears. It is essential to endure pain to taste success,” she said.
Ms. Bhat is proud of her traditional middle-class
background. “There is a wrong notion prevailing among a section of society that beauty pageants is all about glamour. My parents used to tell that emphasis should not be given for external appearance, but to keep the heart and soul unpolluted. Beautiful person is one who is compassionate and has firm belief in the path of righteousness,” she said.
Ms. Bhat has been selected to represent India in Miss Supranational 2014 competition to be held in Poland. No Indian has won the crown at Miss Supranational event so far. My immediate aim is to emerge victorious in the event and bring laurels to my nation,” she said.
