NIT-K ranked fourth globally in Google Summer Code 2020

The National Institute of Technology – Karnataka (NIT-K), Surathkal, has been ranked fourth globally in the list of universities with the most accepted students for Google Summer Code (GSoC) – 2020.

The GSoC is a global programme organised by Google Open Source team with an aim to introduce students to open source software development. The students are paired with mentors from open source organisations to work on a programming-intensive project. This year, the programme is running from June – August 2020, the institute said in a release.

It said that 23 students from NITK got selected for GSoC 2020 in some of the best open source organisations across the world. A total of 1,198 students from 550 universities globally are participating in GSoC 2020.

Over the past three years, there has been a voluntary and organised effort led by Mohit P. Tahiliani, Assistant Professor, Department of Computer Science and Engineering, and interested students from various departments of NIT-K to structurally plan out open source activities in the institute. The first batch which was a part of the effort resulted in seven selections in GSoC and the number has increased in the past two years, thereby showing the growth of NITK in the field of open source contributions, the release said.

Kalaburagi teacher chosen for MHRD’s national award

A science teacher from the Government High School at Bandarwad village in Afzalpur taluk of Kalaburagi district has brought laurels to the district by bagging the national-level Best Teacher Award for this year.

Surekha Jagannath Dengi has been selected for the prestigious award constituted by the Ministry of Human Resources Development (MHRD).

Ms. Surekha, speaking to The Hindu on Sunday, said that a team of State Selection Committee and Organisation Selection Committee along with jury members shortlisted the teachers and held a videoconference on August 13. “The 10-minute interaction with the jury included a presentation of our contributions towards teaching methods besides publications, research papers, and teaching skills,” she added.

Ms. Surekha was conferred the taluk-level best teacher award in 2016 and district-level best teacher award in 2017.

This Lady’s Home Is A Mini Library With 5,000 Books

Every year, on Aug. 9, bibliophiles celebrate Book Lovers Day. It is an unofficial holiday that encourages people to pick up a book or two and spend the day reading. On the occasion of Book Lovers Day, Star of Mysore spoke to a resident of Mysuru who has been very passionate about books and this avid reader has turned her home into a mini library.

Writer and an voracious reader Anasuya S. Kempanahalli is a resident of T.K. Layout, Bogadi 2nd Stage. Her mini library in her house has over 5,000 books. Her book collection includes numerous authors on various subjects, most prominently on Sharana, Janapada and Kannada literature as well as about freedom fighters and achievers in various fields.

Popular Kannada writers are also her favourite picks with a huge collection of books at home including those of Kuvempu, Dejagow and CPK.

Speaking to Star of Mysore, Anasuya said that she started collecting books in 2005. She holds Ph.D and said that she never forgets to buy a book whenever she attends any book release function in city.

She has penned numerous books including Kannada Janapada Kathegalalli Paativrityada Parikalpane, Kannada Janapada Kathegalalli Sthree, Anasuya Chutukugalu, Bhuvanada Belaku Maharshi Valmiki, Parampareya Payanadalli Nannavaru Nenapu, Kannada Siriya Nalegalu, Kannadada Savyasachi: Dejagow-97, Akkamahadevi Siddhi Sadhanegalu, Nayakara Samskritika Tottilu: Devara Ganjigatte, Mathe Hemavathi Kuvempu, Huttadolagana Chitta, Rakta Kamala, Vishwakutumbi, Adikavi Valmiki, Ahimsavadi Shabari, Moudhya Nirmulane mattu Vaicharikate and Valmiki Drishtiyalli Rajaneeti. 

She has also been an editor of numerous books including Beda Valmiki Mahile: Srujanashilathe, Ranjita Chutukugalu, Kuvempu: Kelavu Notagalu, Dejagow-96, Kannada Janapada Kathegalalli Atte-Soseyaru, Kavyaradhane, Dejagow Avara Ittichina Kathegalu, Maharshi Valmiki Divya Darshana (Part-1), Nudi Pushpanjali, Badukina Deevige, Maharshi Valmiki Divya Darshana (Part-2), Kannadiyalli Kadamba and Chutuku Sahitya – Ondu Sameekshe.

A recipient of numerous awards, Anasuya has also acted in a shot film, ‘Amma.’ She has worked as a Kannada and Political Science lecturer in Mahajana FGC and Karnataka State Open University and is currently working as a non-teaching faculty in Sri Jayachamarajendra College of Engineering.

Collecting books and reading is my favourite hobby. Books are our best friends. I have gifted hundreds of books to my students. I always encourage them to keep their mobile phones away and instead pick up a book to read, says Anasuya S. Kempanahalli, Bibliophile and writer.

Kannada study centre to be set up in Mysuru

The State government has decided to establish the Kannada Classical Language Study Centre on a 10-acre plot at the foot of Chamundi Hills in Mysuru.

A decision to this effect was taken at a meeting convened by Kannada and Culture Minister C.T. Ravi in Bengaluru on Friday.

The proposed land belongs to Mysore university, states an official release.

Mr. Ravi directed the authorities to initiate measures to ensure that the centre began work within one month. He warned that the government would not hesitate to initiate action against officials who delay the work.

Although school dropouts themselves, parents of this 24-year-old Jamkhandi lad, continued to push him towards a fulfilling job as a ‘collector’. Anand Kaladagi secured an All India Rank 446 in the Union Public Service Commission, and is among the 43 candidates from Karnataka in the top 800.’

His parents Veeresh and Sumithra, who were denied formal education, continued farming on their 10-acre land and had a small pandal business in Bagalkot. “They pushed me to study well, which led me  to clear the examination in the second attempt,” Anand told TNIE. The problems in his tier-two city served as further inspiration to clear the UPSC exam.

Anand had to leave his hometown to study mechanical engineering at Gogte Institute of Technology, Belagavi. He hopes to make a difference in the education sector. “Privatisation has gripped the sector, and making quality education accessible is my goal. I can strengthen the public education system — government schools and colleges —  being in the service,” he said.

Mandya-based Dr Abhishek Gowda M J , who secured All India Rank 278 in UPSC, saw the services as an opportunity to nip health issues in the bud through effective policy implementation. Son of agriculturalist Javarayigowda and homemaker Jayamma, Dr Gowda completed his schooling at the Government Kannada Medium School in Maregowdanahalli, where the seed of being a civil servant was planted in him by a teacher.

IISc-Bengaluru, IIT-Madras top HRD ministry rankings

The Indian Institute of Science at Bengaluru in Karnataka is the No.1 higher educational institute in the country as per NIRF rankings.

The Indian Institute of Science (IISc), Bangalore, the first Indian institution to make it to the top 10 in a global ranking, has been ranked at the top in the annual national rankings released by the HRD ministry.

Seven Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs) have also made it to the list of the top 10 educational institutions released under the National Institutional Ranking Framework (NIRF), the other two being Banaras Hindu University (BHU) and Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU).

The results of the second edition of the domestic ranking were announced by HRD Minister Prakash Javadekar here today.

Unlike last year, this time the ranking was released under five categories — Overall, Colleges, Universities, Management and Engineering.

IISc figured at the top in ‘Overall’ and ‘Universities’ categories.

JNU, which was at third position in the last ranking, has been ranked second this year in ‘Universities’ category.

In the ‘Overall’ ranking, the university, which has been at the centre of controversies for over a year, has been placed at the sixth position.

Last month, IISc was ranked eighth in the Times Higher Education or THE Rankings, 2017 in the “best small universities” category, joining the elite list that includes California Institute of Technology (Caltech) from the US, Ecole Normale Superieure from France and Pohang University of Science and Technology, South Korea.

The NIRF outlines a methodology to rank institutions across the country. The methodology draws from the overall recommendations and broad understanding arrived at by a core committee set up by the ministry, to identify the broad parameters for ranking various universities and institutions.

The parameters broadly cover ‘Teaching, Learning and Resources’, ‘Research and Professional Practices’, ‘Graduation Outcomes’, ‘Outreach and Inclusivity’ and ‘Perception’.

Eminent scholar U.P. Upadhyaya passes away near Udupi

His book – The Tulu Lexicon, comprising six volumes, was a major contribution to the linguistics

Noted scholar and the Chief Editor of monumental linguistic work, The Tulu Lexicon, Uliyar Padmanabha Upadhyaya, passed away near Udupi on Friday night. He was 88 and is survived by a son and a daughter.

Sources said that he passed away at a hospital in Manipal at about 11:30 p.m. on July 17.

His wife Susheela who was also an eminent Tulu scholar and who had compiled The Tulu Lexicon with him had passed away on January 14, 2014 at the age of 77 years.

Mr. Upadhyaya was born in a priestly scholar family on April 10, 1932 at Uliyar in Majur Village near Kaup in Udupi district. His father, Sitaram Upadhyaya was a reputed scholar in the court of the Raja of Travancore.

The Tulu Lexicon, with six volumes, was a major contribution to the linguistics by the Upadhyaya couple. Its first volume was published in 1988 and the last volume in 1997. The Lexicon has been published by Rashtrakavi Govinda Pai Samshodana Kendra at Udupi.

Playwright K. Mahalinga Bhat, Associate Professor in Kannada, St. Aloysius Evening College, Mangaluru told The Hindu that his Tulu lexicon project was a major work in Indian languages. The couple had followed the dictionary science and methodology in compiling it and it is of international standard.

The Upadhyayas did serious research work in linguistics and folk culture and produced a number of books-some of them jointly, some individually and some in collaboration with others, he said.

Some of the significant books and articles of Mr. Upadhyaya included Nanjanagudu Kannada (Vokkaliga Dialect), Coorg Kannada, Kuruba – A Dravidian Language, Kannada – A Phonetic Language, Malayalam Language and Literature (with Ms. Susheela), Effect of Bilingualism on Bidar Kannada, Coimbatore Tamil, Kannada as Spoken by Different Population Groups in Mysore City, Dravidian and Negro African: Ethno Linguistic Study (with Ms. Susheela), Conversational Kannada, Coastal Karnataka and Bhuta Worship: Aspects of a Ritualistic Theatre (with Ms. Susheela).

He had acquired three Post Graduate (MA) degrees in Sanskrit, Kannada and Linguistics from Madras, Kerala and Pune Universities, Vidwan in Hindi and PhD in Linguistics from the Pune University for his thesis titled “A Comparative Study of Kannada Dialects”. He had command over Hindi, Kannada, Tulu, Malayalam, Tamil, English, French and Olof, the language of Senegal in Africa.

He was a visiting Professor at the Universities of London and Paris.

Noted critic Muralidhar Upadhya Hiriyadkka said that in addition to Tulu, the couple had made significant contribution to folklore research.

Malleshappa Addedara and Kavitha Diggavi from Koppal, Jayasingh Ambulal Thakur from Bidar, K Ramesh from Kolar, Bheemaiah from Yadagir, Rajanagowda Pattara and Sharanappa Karishetty from Raichur, Krishnamurthy N from Haveri, Narayanaswami R from Bengaluru Rural, Renukaiah HR from Tumakuru and Channegowda from Ramanagara. The government, via the teachers’ welfare fund and students’ welfare fund, has sanctioned `50,000 each to the 31 schools where these teachers are employed.

Deepthi Anjanachar: The Class XII topper with big dreams from a family of dropouts

After sharing the fourth position in the science stream with three other students in the IIPUC exams by scoring 593 marks out of 600, Deepthi is now determined to become a scientist.

Deepthi Anjanachar is soft spoken to the point of being inconspicuous at times. But beneath it all is a steely determination to excel.

Nobody in her family including her brother has studied beyond class XII. Deepthi, though, is dreaming big.

After sharing the fourth position in the science stream with three other students in the IIPUC exams by scoring 593 marks out of 600, she is now determined to become a scientist.

“Since I had no one to inspire me in particular, I had to inspire myself,” she asserted.

Neither her father, a class IX dropout, nor her mother passed SSLC. Her older brother dropped out of school after failing in II PUC.

Deepthi’s achievement comes even as her father Anjanachar, who has been working in a garage, has been laid low by gangrene brought on by uncontrolled diabetes. He is recuperating at Sri Siddhartha Medical College.

Her mother Jayalaksmi TV, a homemaker, on Tuesday accompanied the proud girl with sweets to meet the Vidhaynidhi Independent PU college’s secretary Pradeep Kumar as the latter had helped them.

“Alongside her father, in the hospital, she had been attending the online classes to crack the NEET and CET with great determination,” remarked Dr Devipriya, her biology teacher.

Deepthi scored cent per in Biology, Physics, and Chemistry, and 98 in Mathematics. In Kannada, she scored 99 and 96 in her second language English.

She not only wants to become a doctor but also wants to research and discover drugs for life-threatening ailments.

Her proud brother Abhishek, who works with a private company told The New Indian Express , that his younger sister has been fulfilling the dreams of the entire family and he sees her continuing to do so.

A student from Dharwad has developed the Z Share app, an alternative to SHAREit, that he claims transfers files two times faster than the popular Chinese app.

Within a few days of its release, more than 10,000 people have reportedly downloaded the android app. It has a 4.9 star rating at the moment and has clocked over 2000 reviews too.

Shravan Vasant Hegde from Kansur village near Sirsi in Uttara Kannada district, pursuing his BCA degree from CSI College in Dharwad, is the developer.

He says he developed the app within 15 days, and with the help of his cousin, who is into software, made his newly developed Z Share app available on Google Playstore.

Shravan says he has experience in developing apps and had developed a couple of apps for Karnatak University students already.

“After Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s words to go desi, I thought of developing the app and started to develop the app in the beginning of June. Within two weeks, I completely developed it and now it is available on playstore. I have plans to release it on iOS too,” he added.

The app transfers files like images, videos, pdfs and other types. The average speed is about 6 mbps, which is double that the Chinese app currently offers, Shravan claims. When the users are using the latest phones the transfer speed reaches a max of 10 mbps too, he went on to say.
