Hubballi optometrist gets UK fellowship

Hubballi :

Kunal Shah , 35, a BS optometry graduate from BITS, Pilani-Sankara Nethralaya, and CEO of Hubballi-based startup Eyesavers has got a fellowship from the British Contact Lens Association (BCLA). He is the fourth India optometrist to receive the BCLA fellowship. Professor James Wolffsohn of Aston University honoured Shah in Pune recently.

Expressing joy on receiving the fete, Kunal told TOI that the adoption of technology has been instrumental in getting the fellowship.

“Our startup, floated two years ago, has been the first in India to adopt I-profiler technology by Zeiss and Visio Office Plus by Essilor from France which can calculate the position of eyes in front of the lenses at a precision of 1/10th mm at a click of a button. Now, 4-5 other optometrists have borrowed these technologies in India,” he said.

Kunal’s father Prakash Shah, who is also involved in optical business for the past five decades, said that he was worried when Kunal wanted to invest Rs 20 lakh on I-profiler and Rs 8.50 lakh on Visio Office Plus. “Now I am convinced by his innovations. Though we have Hubli Opticals since 1953, he floated separate brand at his own risk,” he said.

Kunal is offering free service using Visio Office Plus technology to avoid fitting errors. . “Usually, we don’t consider the size of nose, eyes and forehead while suggesting a frame for patients. This technology considers whether the wearer of the glass is head-mover or eye-mover while preparing the perfect frame,” he claimed.

Kunal is the only optometrist in North Karnataka to provide cosmetic eye to fill self-confidence among people who have only one eye by birth.

Final year students of computer science and engineering of Srinivas Institute of Technology (SIT), Valachil – Shraddha, Krishnanad Bhat, Sowmya, Prajnashree, Supritha M – have developed an android based project “Agricultural Plant Disease Detection” under the guidance of Nagaraja Hebbar N. This project won first place in intra-collegiate competition conducted by the institute for its students, Shrinivasa Mayya D, principal, SIT said.

This project is useful to recognize the diseases that plants are affected using the image of the leaf. The major beneficiaries of the project are farmers for they will also get the medication details for the corresponding disease through this application. In the present day, agricultural plants are affected by different types of disease. This application helps farmer in obtaining details pertaining to disease afflicting their crop and the remedial steps they can take to mitigate it.

This application basically identifies diseases based on damage patterns observed in leaves of agricultural plants. The application also indicates prescribed medication according to the disease condition with which the plants are affected. This project will help farmers for taking quick decisions related to the yields. If proper medication is applied in the initial stage, farmers can protect their yields against further damage, Shrinivasa Mayya noted.

The application is blended with existing technology which will serve the farmers. A Raghavendra Rao, president of A Shama Rao Foundation and A Srinivasa Rao, vice-president congratulated and appreciated the efforts of the students’ in developing the app and also the faculty for guiding the students in the right direction with their academic endeavours. His is a story of struggle and success. Coming from a poor economic background did not deter him from pursuing his goal of getting a first rank, which had eluded him in BA and B.Ed.

On Monday, Jayaprakash R, the son of a hairdresser, stood beaming when he was awarded four GOLD medals for getting the first rank in MA Economics, at the convocation of Davangere University.

“I wouldn’t have achieved my goal without the support of my family, especially my elder brother who discontinued his studies after PUC I to enable me to pursue my education,” Jayaprakash told Express after receiving the GOLD medals from Prof Devaraj, vice-chairman of the UGC.

It was Jayaprakash’s mother Anjinamma’s dream too to see her sons well educated. Though she was uneducated, she encouraged them at every step. Jayaprakash’s father Ramanna K B runs a salon. “I assist my father in his salon during my leisure hours daily as it is our family profession. Though I made every effort to shine in academics, the first rank eluded me in BA and B.Ed,” he said.

When he joined MA, he pushed himself hard to get the dream rank.

“I devoted six hours daily for my studies despite all odds. I am delighted that I have achieved what I have set out to do,” Jayaprakash said.

His next goal is to get a lecturer’s post. “I have written the KAS exams and am preparing for the Karnataka State Eligibility Test and the National Eligibility Test,” he said.

At present, he is working as a field investigator at the National Sample Survey office in Hubballi.

However, this golden boy has one unfulfilled dream. “I want to do PhD, but our economic background may not allow me to study further,” Jayaprakash said.

Achievers tie the knot

Dinaker Kenjur and Sabita Gundmi got married in Udupi on Tuesday.
Dinaker Kenjur and Sabita Gundmi got married in Udupi on Tuesday.

Both – Dinaker Kenjur (32) and Sabita Gundmi (29) – have firsts to their credit in the most backward Koraga community, a Scheduled Tribe, and both entered the wedlock in a simple ceremony on the Ambedkar Jayanti here on Tuesday.

The main occupation of the community is basket weaving and collection of minor forest produce. The population of this community in Udupi and Dakshina Kannada, and Kasaragod district of Kerala taken together is about 17,000.

While Ms. Gundmi is Assistant Professor at the Department of Sociology in Mangalore University for last one-and-a-half years, Mr. Kenjur is guest lecturer in the Department of Commerce in the same university since 2009.

Both Ms. Gundmi and Mr. Kenjur overcame heavy odds to make a mark in their community. While Ms. Gundmi is the first person from the community to pass National Entrance Test (NET) for lectureship conducted by the University Grants Commission in 2010, Mr. Kenjur is the first in the community to have done M.Com.

Ms. Gundmi lost her father, when she was five while her mother died in an accident when she was studying SSLC. She had to discontinue her studies for two years after SSLC due to financial problems.

But she persevered and completed M.A. in Sociology standing second in Mangalore University in 2010. She cleared the NET in the first attempt.

She also cleared the State-level Eligibility Test (SLET) for lectureship conducted by the University of Mysore. She is pursuing Ph.D. for the last two years.

Mr. Kenjur too was born in a poor family. He suffered a polio attack when he was young and it affected his leg. He too had to struggle to complete his education. He has also completed third semester in MBA course from Karnataka State Open University. He is trying to clear the NET.

Both are childhood friends. They had both decided to marry nine years ago. Both have no superstition and decided to marry on Ambedkar Jayanti here.

“I told my well-wishers that I was born on a Tuesday. I joined work on a Tuesday. It would make no difference to me to marry on a Tuesday [which is considered inauspicious]. I have been deeply influenced by Dr. Ambedkar’s philosophy. Hence I and Dinaker decided to get married on Ambedkar Jayanti,” he said.
