Sticking with it

Dhruv Mullick’s only agenda is to bet on sporting talent that is off the beaten track. Inspired by the celluloid story Jerry Maguire, city-based Dhruv has set his sights on the Indian hockey team. A sports entrepreneur, Dhruv is building the brands of two promising hockey players — Raghunath and SK Uthappa just before the Olympics season heats up.

“My idea is to get hockey to a platform where these fantastic players are identified by even school kids. To build brands which can compete with leading cricketers’ brands. But this is just the beginning and we are taking baby steps,” says the entrepreneur. With the London Olympics fast approaching, Dhruv thought this was the right time to build a glamorous image of a much neglected sport. “Raghunath is a typical Kodava lad. His brutal strength as a drag-flicker and commitment to the sport makes him the perfect poster boy of the team. While Uthappa’s talent and the coach’s (Michael Nobb) high ranking, makes him a bankable player. These traits make them brands in themselves,” says Dhruv.

But the going hasn’t been easy. “It is extremely difficult in a cricket-crazy nation to sell non-cricket sports. But the tougher the challenge, the better it gets. The only focus now is to get them as much exposure as possible before the Olympics,” says the shrewd marketing professional. Dhruv who has a BA honours in international business and economics, has trained as a sports brand manager under big names of the Indian sports arena. But his most memorable experience was with cricketing legend Sunil Gavaskar. “The opportunity to work for him and interact with him, is something that I cherish even to this day,” says Dhruv.

Though hockey is his favourite sport, he cannot hide his love for cricket. Not just for school teams, he also managed to play the first cricket season at the university in London. “I played for Regents College during 2004 just for the first season,” he reminisces, adding, “I have a Sunday cricket club with friends. I also play a bit of hockey. But my skills lie off the field,” says Dhruv.

His plan ahead is to ensure that both Raghunath and Uthappa’s brands take off in a big way. The smart entrepreneur concludes by remembering his favourite line from Jerry Maguire, “Show me the money.” And we do hope that hockey as a sport can do that.

City Equestrian for Intl. show jumping championship

Mysore, Apr. 17

Arun Mariba Shetty, one of the top equestrians of the country from Mysore, will be representing India along with Ajai Appachu and Yeshan Khambata at the International Show Jumping Championship to be held at Seoul in South Korean on April 18.

The event, which will see top show jumpers from across the world, will conclude on Apr. 26.

Arun Mariba Shetty, who is also the Public Relations Officer of Vidya Vikas Institute of Engineering and Technology (VVIET) on Bannur Road in city, is the son of Mounted Police Commandant S.G. Mariba Shetty, who has garnered several awards at the national and international level in equestrian events.

Ajai Appachu and Yeshan Khambata are associated with the Embassy Riding School in Bangalore for many years and have taken part in several national and international events.

Show jumpers from Australia, United Kingdom, New Zealand, Japan, China and Middle East will be taking part in the competition which is unique as the riders have to prove their skills on ‘borrowed horses.’ Normally each rider has his own stable of three or four horses which are attuned to the rider and vice versa but in this case it requires a high degree of knowledge of horses and an ability to understand them and make them do the rider’s bidding.

Synthetic track by May end: DC

Work on Synthetic Track laying in Mangala Stadium in progress in Mangalore on March 19, 2012. Photo: R.Eswarraj / The Hindu

Mangala Stadium will get a full-fledged synthetic track by May end, Deputy Commissioner N.S. Channappa Gowda said here after reviewing the progress of the work on Monday.

Mr. Gowda told The Hindu that he was hopeful of ensuring that facilities to hold competitions on either side within the track (called D areas) would be created. The tender that had already been awarded was for the creation of facilities only in one D area. Mr. Gowda said the district administration had apprised the Government of the need to create facilities on both sides.

Sportspersons, sporting bodies, and coaches have said that major tournaments could be held only if facilities were created on either side as this would allow holding of multiple events simultaneously.

The tender for the Rs. 3.15 crore synthetic track has been awarded to the lowest bidder – Delhi-based sports infrastructure company Syncotts International, which has been given four months to complete the work. The creation of additional facilities to allow competitions on either side is expected to cost Rs. 40 lakh. Mr. Gowda said that the sports infrastructure company would be asked to place orders for synthetic material (which have to be imported) for facilities in the second D area too, after securing in-principle approval from the Government. He agreed that the administration would have to bear additional financial burden if it had to import in two consignments.

According to an official release, Mr. Gowda said that the two committees — one for supervision and another to ensure compliance to technical standards — have been formed to ensure quality in laying the synthetic track. In addition, the firm would get money only after the International Athletics Federation certified the quality of work, he said.

Deputy Speaker of the Legislative Assembly N. Yogish Bhat, who presided over the review meeting, said that he would take up the matter of providing facilities in the second D area with the Department of Sports and Youth Affairs, according to the release.

Mr. Bhat urged the district administration to develop a swimming pool in Emmekere Lake which was being developed.

Mr. Gowda earlier asked the officials concerned to submit reports regarding the proposals to set up a sports hostel in Kadri and an indoor stadium on a 1.5-acre land in Shakthinagar. Commissioner of Mangalore Urban Development Authority Ajit Kumar Hegde said a report on the proposal to develop a sports ground in Bangra-Kuloor areas would be prepared.

Mangala Stadium Committee members said there was an agreement with the Corporation Bank to meet the expenses of maintenance of the stadium. Mr. Gowda said he would hold further discussions with the bank’s Chairman and Managing Director. About Rs. 40 lakh had been released for developing a stadium at Swaraj Maidan in Moodbidri, the official release said.
