The return of roaring Jawa Yezdis

Bangalore:

There could be nothing more exciting than the roar of a motorcycle running full throttle. And if the bike happens to be yesteryear’s Yezdi Jawa variety, it is not only about nostalgia but also a power-packed performance.

Ask Toby Phillippe, an American expat, who restored a rusty 1970 model Jawa bike he took a great liking to three years ago. He has since been riding his favourite motorcycle every day.

Toby is one of the hundreds in the city, who belong to the Jawa Yezdi Motorcycle Club, and rode towards Tumkur on Sunday morning to celebrate the 10th International Jawa Yezdi Day.

Members of this club are passionate bike enthusiasts and owners of the rare Jawa bikes, that lead a pack of rare bikes, whose production was discontinued in India in 1996. “The Jawa Day is celebrated on the second Sunday of July every year. This year we are riding out of the city to have a get-together in Shiva’s Farm near Shivagange,” said John Samuel, a co-founder of Bangalore Jawa Yezdi Motorcylce Club. Samuel owns two Jawa bikes – a 1975 model B and and 1980 classic.

Over 80 rare bikes were present at the event, which started from St Mark’s Road, outside Bowring Institute. “The best part of the bike is its roar. It makes me feel very good to be on the bike,” said Toby.

Shanta Kumar, who works for ITC, has been riding Jawa bikes for more than 20 years now. He said, “Jawa bikes have a better road grip and pollution control than most other bikes. The best thing about the bike is that your back doesn’t ache even if you ride the entire day.”

For Mysoreans, Jawa is more than a bike

About 150 vintage Jawa Yezdi models like the 1945 Czech Jawa model, Jawa Bison, Yezdi 350, Tankswitch Jawa, Roadkings, Oilking, Yezdi ‘B’ type, Pionyr’s, Jet Jawa and Yezdi Colt hit the roads in Mysore to mark the International Jawa Yezdi Day on Sunday.

Jawa Yezdi bikes were made in India at Yadavagiri in Mysore. Today, apartments are coming up on the land where the plant was once situated.

Jawa was coined using the first words of Czech founder Janeek, Frantisek and Wanderer, the German bike he started producing at his plant in Prague. But for Mysoreans, Jawa is also the acronym for its ruler Jayachamarajendra Wadiyar.

Raian Irani, founder Faroukh Irani’s son, said, “Wadiyar was keen on setting up the bike unit in Mysore. Pune was a contender. As governor of the then Mysore state, Wadiyar inaugurated Ideal Jawa (India) Limited in 1961 with the slogan: The forever bike, forever value.

The company closed down in 1990s in face of challenge from the new generation of 100 cc Japanese bikes.

Canada PM concludes India visit with hockey game in Bangalore

Canadian Prime Minister Stephen Harper wound up his six-day trip to India with a visit to a leading local school, where he played a game of hockey enthralling students on friday. Accompanied by wife Laureen Harper, he visited the Bishop Cotton Boys School where he was received by school captains. Students of Bishop Cotton Girls School were also in attendance to welcome the visiting dignitaries.

The Boys school principal, Prof John P Zachraiah, briefed him about the school, its pupils and their achievements.

At the playground, Harper had a feel of the cricket bat, but chose not to face a single delivery though Prithvi of Class XI was practicing vigorously to bowl.

Harper then joined Cotton Girls Camp led by Nandini S Patil of Class X to play a 10-minute hockey match, while Canadian sports minister Baljit Singh Gosal joined forces with boys’ team led by Yash Gopalka, studying in Class XII.

Boys’ team beat the rival camp which included Harper 2-0.

The Harpers then drove straight to Bengaluru International Airport at Devanahalli and boarded the Manila-bound Royal Canadian Air Force special aircraft.

Pankaj Advani: Eighth World title and more to come

Bangalore:

Pankaj Advani’s eighth World title, the seventh in billiards, has been a long time coming, but his repeat win over one of the legends of modern era, Mike Russell, in Sunday’s final at Leeds, cemented the 27-year-old Bangalorean’s place among all-time greats.

His last World title was in 2009, also at Leeds and the opponent he beat in the final was also Russell. However, Advani drew blank the following three years with the exception of the gold medal at the 2010 Asian Games and the Asian billiards titles (2010, 2012).

It was a difficult period when Advani went through a roller-coaster ride that threw up a whole range of questions, from technical flaws in his game to powers of concentration to pressure due to public expectations.

Advani’s mentor and long time coach Arvind Savur believed that his ward’s losses had more to do with a drop in confidence level rather than flaws creeping into his game.

Thus, Sunday’s win over one of his idols would have come as a great relief for Advani for more reasons than one as he had opted to skip a professional snooker event in China whose dates overlapped with those of the World billiards tournament.

“I am so pleased to have won my eighth World title. I took a gamble while choosing to play the World Championships here in Leeds and not the International Championship on the professional snooker tour and I am glad that paid off.

“I took a tough decision earlier this year to play both Billiards and Snooker at the highest level, and I am glad that I have been able to maintain top form in both.

“This victory, like every other shall be treasured yet has its own special meaning given the unique challenges I have faced this year. This win is a testament that if you follow your heart, nothing’s impossible,” said Advani in a statement.

Proficiency in both snooker, in which he won the IBSF World championship crown in 2003, and billiards, has set Advani apart from the rest of the pack. This summer, he turned professional in snooker and almost immediately made a mark by defeating the likes of former World No.1 Steve Davis and John Higgins besides a bunch of higher ranked players.

Yet, Advani’s love for billiards has always been very pronounced and it reflected in his decision to travel to Leeds rather than China this month.

Now that he has won as many as eight World titles at such a young age, sky is the limit for Advani and he has the makings of a legend, though the billiards connoisseurs are waiting for a 1,000-plus break that would cement his berth in the pantheon of the three-ball game.

Savur, himself a legend, opined that his ward definitely should be included in the list of all-time greats, if only for his achievements, but notching a four-figure break was subject to many factors.

“First, I am extremely happy and proud that he won his eighth World title and that too by defeating a player like Russell. Pankaj definitely is among all-time greats because he has achieved so much at such a young age.

“As regards the 1,000-plus breaks, he is capable of it, but whether he gets the opportunity remains to be seen since it is all too rare these days that matches are played over four hours or even five as was the case in Leeds.

“You need to get into the zone to make such mammoth breaks that also demand intense concentration. In Pankaj’s case, he has all the attributes and definitely there is a lot of scope for improvement.

“No player is perfect. Pankaj has admitted that there are a few technical improvements or adjustments he can make. But then, you need time to try out and given his busy schedule, he has not been able to work on those aspects.

“However, I will say that he is bound to get better with age and I am sure, he will be achieving a lot more in the future,” said Savur.

Aaron claims first gold; Richa, Khade dazzle

Aaron D’Souza kept his composure during a frustrating 50-minute delay and beat back the challenge of Sandeep Sejwal to nail down his first individual title of the 66th Senior National Aquatic championships here on Thursday.

A power failure caused by heavy afternoon showers delayed the start of the fourth day’s proceedings even as the swimmers and technical officials took their respective positions at the pool deck. It took almost an hour to sort out of the problem.

Aaron, who had faltered in his bid in the 50 backstroke and 200 freestyle earlier, had to swim the first event of evening finals — the men’s 200M individual medley. The Karnataka lad, however, faced no problems as he touched the wall in two minutes 07.38 seconds for the gold. “It was really frustrating. But I am happy that I won. I wasn’t in the best of my form here,” said Aaron, who have the 100M freestyle and 200M butterfly on Friday.

Sejwal of RSPB claimed silver in 2:11.38 while another Karnataka lad, Arvind M, pocketed the bronze in 2:12.95.

From lane three, Aaron was quickly off the blocks, completing the butterfly segment in 26.76 ahead of Arvind (27.65). Sejwal was in sixth position, timing 28.17 seconds. Aaron gained momentum in the backstroke segment (58.81), taking a good two seconds lead over Arvind while Sejwal climbed to third position.

Breaststroke specialist Sejwal then almost caught up with Aaron in the next leg. By the end of the 150-metre mark, the 20-year-old Aaron was just 0.16 seconds ahead (1:38.55) of Sejwal. The Karnataka swimmer, however, sped away in the freestyle segment to beat Sejwal by three seconds.

Pooja R Alva, who won the 100M butterfly on Wednesday, completed a double by claiming the women’s 200M individual medley in 2:28.30.

In the morning, Karnataka men’s 4x100M freestyle relay team of Gagan AP, Saurabh Sangvekar, Rohit R Havaldar and Aaron D’Souza set a new meet mark, clocking 3:32.14. The relay quartet sliced more than two seconds from their own record of 3:34.55 created last year in Ranchi.

Richa Mishra and Virdhawal Khade stayed on course to bag the individual honours with convincing wins on the penultimate day. Richa dethroned Surabhi Tipre in the 1500M freestyle with a time of 17:46.76 for her fifth gold while Virdhawal bagged the 50M freestyle in 22.84 for his fourth title. In the process, Virdhawal also attained the ‘B’ Standard mark for the 2013 Barcelona World Championship which stands at 23.11.

‘Greatly moved by Saina gesture’

“I have been greatly moved by the kind of sportsman spirit Saina Nehwal has shown by giving me Rs2 lakh from her own pocket. Only a true sportsman can feel for another sportsperson.” Girisha Hosanagara Nagarajegowda, India’s lone medallist at the recent Paralympics Games in London, choked as he struggled to find words to express his gratitude to India’s badminton ace on his arrival at the Indira Gandhi International Airport on Tuesday.

Though the 24-year-old Girisha’s barefoot scissor leap of 1.74m matched that of gold medallist Iliesa Delana of Fiji, he had to settle for silver for taking more jumps. But reaching this far was not an easy task for the Bangalore-based differently-abled athlete as he received absolutely no support from the government or the corporate sector in the run up to the London Games.

“I just hope that the corporates will shower the same kind of cash rewards which they did on the six medal winners on their return. The government’s incentive — Rs30 lakh and a job offer in Sports Authority of India — has come as a big relief for me. It wasn’t easy to prepare for the Games without the corporate or government help,” said Girisha, son of a farmer in Hassan, Karnataka.

Girisha revealed that he was motivated by wrestler Sushil Kumar’s silver medal-winning performance in London just a few days before taking the flight for the Paralympics.

“Sushil is my role model. And when he won his second Olympics medal, a silver, I was determined to repeat the same feat,” Girisha said. “People should understand and recognise our efforts because it’s the same kind of training and effort that is required to win a medal at the Paralympic Games.”

Speaking about his future, Girisha said: “Right now, I want to continue with my training and want to win gold in the Rio de Janeiro Games in 2016. And when I retire, I want to take up coaching to help athletes like me who hardly get any support in India.” Girisha is India’s third silver medallist ever in Paralympics.
