Faiz Siddique Interview: “Bangalore shows lots of enthusiasm towards polo”

PoloBF17apr2013

He has been on the polo circuit for over a decade now. Having trained himself in one of the best stables in Argentina, Major Faiz Siddique is an ambitious man. He aims to make Bangalore a Polo loving city, and is tirelessly working towards it at least until his posting lasts here. He is passionate about horses and he displays the same when he is saddled up for a game of polo.

In a free-wheeling chat with Sportskeeda, he talks about the polo season that began in Bangalore today and about Bangalore’s interest in the sport…

Can you explain about the arena polo since it’s not what’s played at a competitive level?

It’s more like an exhibition match. We start at around 7 in the morning and it goes on till 10pm. The fact that it is played under lights gives this a festive atmosphere, and with the DJ playing in the back and a fashion show after the match, will only add to the glamour. Arena polo is played on a smaller ground and hence gets easier for first timers to follow the sport better.

What’s the response you get for polo in Bangalore?

People in Bangalore have shown a lot of enthusiasm. The response to Polo is improving by the passing year. They want to come ride, learn polo and even want their kids to pursue the sport.

Is the event restricted for civilians?

There is no restriction for civilians to come watch the matches. You know, when there’s any event happening in an army establishment, civilians hesitate to come. Especially when you refer to polo, people presume that it can’t be free of cost. The army is not charging any entry fee and anyone can come watch the matches. The whole purpose of hosting the season here is to promote the sport among civilians.

Can you elaborate on the growth of polo in Bangalore?

When I started off in Bangalore, there were fewer kids. But over the past year and a half, we have been able to build a team of 15 players who can play good polo. This number is more than what we had seen in the past 15 years put together. We have even taken six of the best players to play in Hyderabad and Delhi to gain exposure.

Polo2BF17apr2013

Is there anyone from Bangalore with a non-army background who has taken to the sport and done well?

Well in the Indian circuit, Dhruvpal Godhara and Manupal Godhara are good examples of civilians taking to the sport. Speaking of Bangaloreans, This boy called Pranav Kapoor picked up the sport inspired by what he had seen during one such Bangalore polo season. He recently moved to Delhi and bought five horses. Sahara hired him to play for their team and he was to play in Delhi, Jaipur, Jodhpur and Mumbai, but unfortunately suffered an injury during the game in Jaipur and had to pull out of the event.

Since you mentioned injury, isn’t this a big worry for parents who want their kids to pursue the sport?

Well yes, injury is a worry. It is a dangerous contact sport. There is an element of fear, but if you train well enough, the chances of getting hurt is reduced drastically.

Can you tell us about how you got into the sport?

Since I grew up during an era when television played Tippu Sultan, I was drawn towards horses and fancied riding them. When I joined the National Defence Academy (NDA) when I was 19, I had an opportunity to learn riding and that’s when I discovered my interest towards polo.

Don’t you find it pressurising to balance playing polo and pursuing a job of a soldier?

Well, when I am posted in the field like in the borders, etc., I can’t dedicate time for polo. But whenever I have the time, I’d love to be playing the sport. There is no pressure at all. For me, it couldn’t have gotten better.

India’s first indoor climbing gym opens in Bangalore

Bangalore is the heartland of sport climbing in India, and it’s rather appropriate that the country’s first indoor climbing gym should open in the city.

Named Equilibrium, the country’s first indoor gym promises to revolutionise the sport in India. It is the execution of an idea that has nestled in Keerthi Pais’s mind for long.

sportinggymBF12apr2013

Pais, chief national coach and until recently the Director of Indian Mountaineering Foundation’s sport climbing committee, has been toying with the idea for years, but it was only recently that it found fruition. He was discussing it with a friend, Sriram Devatha, whose family owns Devatha Plaza (a commercial complex) on Residency Road. Sriram suggested they could set up a gym on the sixth floor. Work on the place took two months, and by the look of things, Equilibrium is just what the city needed for sport enthusiasts.

Built by national champion Praveen CM, what strikes one immediately are the bright colours of the walls and holds that will attract children. There are multiple routes and gradients, designed to cater to first-timers and professionals. The climbing area is air-conditioned, and with crash mats spread underneath, climbers can spend the entire day on the walls by themselves or with friends. One part of the gym has training equipment (treadmill, weight balls, trampoline, etc), while another section has a retail store for adventure products that will be run by former international medalist and national champion Archana BS. Climbers can either buy shoes from the store or rent them for their climbs. Keerthi also plans to open a small café from where people can watch climbers in action, and possibly a cycle store as well.

For Keerthi, the gym is “a dream come true. I’ve been thinking of this for many years, but it all fell into place over just one conversation,” he says. “This can improve the standard of our climbers. It will also attract new climbers. I will also be conducting national camps here, so we will have the country’s best climbers training in Bangalore. We have all the equipment required to train top-class climbers; they don’t need to seek anything elsewhere. This is the sort of facility that international climbers have access to, but which we’ve never had. We haven’t compromised on anything. We got the holds from Korea, because their texture is such that it won’t hurt your fingers.”

The gym will also help in cross-training athletes of other sports, and Keerthi plans to invite them to train at Equilibrium. After all, climbing does wonders to the upper body in particular, and a session on the walls can be both fun and useful in building strength. But it’s for the climbing community that the wall holds most significance, and with the city already having produced the country’s best climbers, such as Praveen CM, Chea Marak, Archana BS, Vathsala MN and Karthik CP, among others, Equilibrium promises better times ahead.

Contact Equilibrium: 9964857497 (Kirthana) or 9886009488 (Keerthi).

Bengaluru academy offers summer camps for UAE children

Advanced cricket students to benefit the most, says coach Madhavan

Dubai:

When temperatures soar in the UAE summer and make it difficult to play cricket outdoors, SGK International Cricket Academy, based on the outskirts of Bengaluru in South India, offers a perfect solution to aspiring cricketers to hone their skills.

R. Madhavan, a former Tamil Nadu batsman who represented Under-25 India against England in the Eighties, will be one of the coaches while there will be several other renowned coaches and ex-internationals at hand to provide the guidance.

“It is open for clubs, academies and even school teams in the UAE to make use of the facilities. However, the advanced and semi-advanced level players stand to benefit the most,” said Madhavan, a former UAE resident who once shared a 240-run partnership with Mohammad Azharuddin for the Under-25 national team against England, led by David Gower.

An added incentive, according to Madhavan, is that, should some of these academies or teams require further training, the left-hander is willing to bring a set of coaches to the UAE as a follow-up.

The academy has five turf wickets, besides a concrete wicket and two artificial turf wickets, a gymnasium, swimming pool, a dormitory to house a 15-member team and a bowling machine. The academy is also planning to offer video analysis. Incidentally, the Kerala Ranji Trophy team used the facilities to prepare for the 2012 season.

“Keeping the interest of state teams from India and abroad, we plan to create indoor nets where teams can practice on natural grass,” says Chandrashekhar K., Chairman and Managing Director of the academy.

Kush Maini becomes first Indian to win a World Series Karting race

New Delhi :

Kush Maini  created history when he became the first Indian driver ever to win a WSK (World Series Karting ) race at the La Conca international Circuit in Muro Lecce in the southern Part of Italy on Sunday the 3rd Feb 2013.

Kush who drives for Team Baby Race was third overall in qualifying out of over 41 entries in the 60 Mini category. All the participants were divided into 4 groups for the elimination heats as once 34 would Race in the Finals.

Kush was in Group C and won two of the heats while coming second in one of them. This entitled him to the Pole Position for the Start of the prefinal Race which was once again the first time for an Indian to start on Pole Position.

The Prefinal which was run over 8 laps of the 1.25 km circuit was extremely well fought with the top 4 drivers. Kush struggled a bit on the pace and finished third in the Prefinal. The Finals started with Kush in the third Place and on the very first Corner Kush moved into second Place behind Martinez.

Martinez pulled off an early lead and Kush was maintaining a distance of about 6 kart lengths as both were lapping at the same Lap times. Meanwhile Pagano who was in third showed extremely fast pace and was catching up to Kush. Soon Pagano overtook Kush and was on his way to catch up with Martinez. Kush played the waiting game and followed Pagano as both of them started to close on Martinez.

On the Eight lap Pagano overtook Martinez and on the 9th lap, Martinex took the lead again except that all the three drivers were driving like a train with no gap in between.

The three of them had broken away from the Pack and it was a very close and exciting race. On the very last Corner Pagano tried to make a move on Martinez and they both touched slowing down Martinez momentarily and also forcing Pagano off the track. Kush who was right behind Seized the opportunity and made a brilliant Pass on martinez which went all the way to the chequered flag where Kush finished just a mere.019 seconds ahead of Martinez in the mostexciting nail biting finish of the weekend.

Kush was extremely happy with the win and was continuously punching the Air to celebrate his victory.

On the Podium Kush was looking up again and again to make sure that he saw the Indian Flag that was rising behind him at the Podium Ceremony.

Kush with the three other European Champions for the other 3 events were then invited for a Press Conference to share their experience for the day.

Kush was very happy and said “I have been driving Karts from the age of 5 and started racing at the age of 7. I spent last year racing in Italy which was a great learning experience for me as I also got several podium finishes in many of the races. However WSK is the biggest race for me and to win here is fulfilling the start of a Dream to become one of the best Drivers. I am now looking forward to the balance three races of the Master Series as well as the two races of the Euro Series.”

Kush was very happy to share the same platform as Max Verstappen, Bocallachi and Alesio Lorandi.

Kush’s Elder brother Arjun Maini  did not have a good start to the event as some Kart issues prevented him from Qualifying in the front. He had a bad crash on the first Heat and followed it with a top 10 position in the second. However he has to be content starting the prefinal A in 23rd Position.

Earlier in the day Arjun was 3rd fastest and this gave him some hope to fight his way from the back of the grid. He drove brilliantly to make 10 positions and finally finish 13th in the KFJ category. This meant that he would be starting in 25th position in the finals that was run over 16 laps. Once again he had an excellent drive and finished 14th.

Still in pain from the crash on Saturday Arjun said, “It was a very tough weekend as I had a very bad start on Friday and Saturday but was very happy with the way I drove on Sunday to finish 14th from over 60 of the world’s best drivers. I will work hard to come in the top 5 for the races to follow.”
