Sports play an important role in everyone’s life especially to keep fit. But as days go by, one finds it difficult to find time to exercise due to their hectic schedules and nature of work.

But here is Shireen Reginald, an Associate Marketing Manager at Rangsons Marketing Services Pvt. Ltd. Mysore, who is a Power-Lifter champion and also a Body-Lifting champion. According to Shireen, “if one can find a place of worship anywhere, one can also find a place to exercise.”

Shireen, speaking to SOM, said that he came to know about Body-Lifting championship through newspapers and invitations from Indian Body Lifting Federation (IBLF) in Punjab which had sent invitations to gyms. After seeing the invitation, he said that he felt the urge in himself to participate in the event and began training himself for the same.

Speaking about Body-Lifting, Shireen said the sport is all about lifting one’s body weight by holding a bar overhead without shaking the legs and body. The most number of times one lifts the body without shaking is considered valid and the person who does the most lift is declared the winner.

Giving credit to his coach Y. Nagesh Rao (YNR) of Appollo Gym, who is a retired Physical Education Teacher of Marimallappa’s High School, Mysore, for his efforts in making what he his now, Shireen said the initial training given by YNR helped him achieve success in many competitions.

Speaking about his work-outs, Shireen said he works out for one-and-a-half-hour everyday and runs a kilometre for warming up before work-out. On Sundays and holidays, he runs one full circle of Kukkarahalli Lake which is about 3.6 kms.

Shireen said, “My job involves a lot of travelling. I have travelled across India and where ever I go, I find a gym and make sure that I never miss my daily work-outs” and added “where ever you go, you will find a place of worship and a place to exercise too,” with a grin.

Elaborating further, Shireen said, “I handle North India and Nepal as Associate Marketing Manager in N. Ranga Rao & Sons that requires a lot of travelling indeed. But in spite of it, I do not miss my exercise even a single day. If my flight is at 6 am, I get up at 2.30 am and exercise for an hour. That is the amount of dedication one should have towards their fitness regime.”

Shireen has participated in the National-Level Body-Lifting Championship organised by All J&K Body Lifting Association affiliated to Indian Body-Lifting Federation and International Body-Lifting Federation held in Amarnath Yatri Nivas Bhavan, Jammu recently.

He has won Gold medal in District-Level Bench Press Competition (Power-Lifting) held at Mysore, Gold in Karnataka State-Level Body-Lifting Championship held in Chamundi Vihar Stadium, Mysore, Bronze in Karnataka State-Level Arm Wrestling Competition held at Jaganmohan Palace, Mysore, Silver in District-Level Arm Wrestling Competition held at Sarada Vilas Centenary Hall, Mysore and secured fourth place in National-Level Body-Lifting Championship held at Jammu and Kashmir.

Shireen did his schooling at St. Thomas School, Vidyaranyapuram, PU from Sarada Vilas College, Krishnamurthypuram and pursued BE in Mechanical Engineering from National Institute of Engineering (NIE), Mysore. After completing his MBA (Marketing) from Centre for Management Studies, SJCE, Mysore, he took up the job at N.Ranga Rao & Sons in city.

Speaking about his food diet, Shireen said that his mother and wife are the ones who prepare all kind of strength rendering foods for him, that help him in performing better.

A resident of J.P. Nagar in city, Shireen stays with his father G. Reginald, a Retired Professor who served as the Principal of Junior First Grade College in Periyapatna, mother Uma Reginald, a home-maker and wife Mangala Shireen, a Law Graduate and a home-maker.

Shireen says that he is indebted to his family and his organisation for their support and added that his organisation which supports sports persons takes care of his travel and other expenditure to participate in the competitions across the country.

Lucknow:

World champion Pankaj Advani (PSPB) won his sixth national snooker title with a commanding 6-3 win over Kamal Chawla of Railways in the 81st national snooker championship, in Lucknow on Friday.

Chawla remained a spectator from his chair for larger period of the match as the Bangalore cueist Advani’s natural prowess for cue sport, both in snooker and billiards, was proven yet again in the ‘City of Nawabs’.

Advani had started the tournament with a break of 145, highest for the championship, and ended the last frame of the championship with a fluent 139.

This was Advani’s overall 24th national title and it came against an opponent, whose swift decisions on the table helped him reach the summit clash of the tournament.

In the final, Advani put up a gutsy break of 139 in the ninth frame to seal the issue in his favour. Chawla proved he was worthy of being in the final but fell short against the eight-time world champion.

Advani rose to the occasion of a national level final, delivering mouth-watering breaks of 84, 69, 61, 64 with the final break of 139 being the icing on the cake, thereby providing a dream finish for any sponsor and organiser.

Advani did not disappoint the spectators, who welcomed the champion for his first-ever visit to the city.

Speaking to PTI over phone, Advani dedicated his title triumph to India’s women on the eve of the International Women’s Day.

“It’s always a matter of pride to participate in the Indian National Championship and an absolute delight to win it. I dedicate this title to the Indian woman on the occasion of International Women’s Day. They are the true architects of society. This win is in their honour,” he said.

Advani’s three century breaks in the tournament was testimony to his mastery over the format, which has helped him earn accolades at the Professional circuit.

His toughest challenge came in the semi-final against Dharminder Lilly, the veteran Punjab cueist, against whom Advani rallied from 0-2 down to win the clash 5-3.

Advani now heads to China for the Haikou World Open with fond memories of his victory in the ‘City of Nawabs’.

Bangalore’s 5-year-old kid in Guinness Book of Records for skating

Bangalore :

A five-year-old boy from the city made it to the Guiness Boook of World Records by skating under 39 Toyota Qualis cars in just 28 seconds. The wonder kid, Gagan S, a kindergarten student at Florence School in Basveshwaranagar, achieved this feat last month.

The boy broke the record of Rohan, 9, from Belgaum who skated across 24 cars in 47 seconds.

Gagan’s father Satish works at a washing machine service centre. He said Gagan was always enthusiastic about skating and joined the skating classes just one-and-half year ago.

Gagan’s proud parents hoped Gagan’s achievement would help skating gain popularity in India and more youngsters take up the sport.

It is not the first recognisation of Gagan’s skating abilities though. In November last year, he had won the ‘youngest skate award’ in Belgaum. His parents now dream about sending him to the Olympics.

Inauguration of gym marked by controversy over poster

The park adjoining Ulsoor Lake, popular among walkers and laughter clubs, is now an open air gymnasium. On Wednesday, the gymnasium, which sports the latest equipment, was inaugurated.

The project was jointly undertaken by the Bruhath Bangalore Mahanagara Palike (BBMP), the Halasuru Lake Residents Welfare Association and realty group RMZ Corp. This is the fifth such outdoor gym in the city.

Imported from Turkey, the equipment in the gym cost over Rs. 20 lakh. It was inaugurated by Rajeev Gowda, Professor of Economics and Social Sciences, Indian Institute of Management, Bangalore.

Mr. Gowda said, “These projects show contribution and commitment to fitness and exercise which is much needed in today’s society.”

Enthused Ulsoor residents feel the project would bring people together and would be of help to senior citizens. “Senior citizens would prefer to exercise out in the open rather than in a gym. Also, we want people from all walks of life to come together and utilise this facility,” said Deepak Khatri, a resident of Ulsoor.

Meanwhile, the inauguration saw some tense moments when some political activists, who identified themselves as supporters of area MLA R. Roshan Baig tore down some posters put up by organisers. They claimed that the fact that Mr. Baig’s picture was not on the poster, which featured Transport Minister Ramalinga Reddy, had angered him and his supporters. Another allegation was that the posters featured the logo of RMZ prominently, while the BBMP logo was either too small or absent.

Guiding lights

Karnataka had multiple heroes in its successful Ranji Trophy campaign but two men in the background also deserve equal credit. Coaches J. Arun Kumar and Mansur Ali Khan provided perfect support for R. Vinay Kumar’s men to win Indian domestic cricket’s number one title

Behind the scenesBowling coach Mansur Ali Khan and batting coach Arun Kumar / Photo: K. Bhagya Prakash / The Hindu
Behind the scenesBowling coach Mansur Ali Khan and batting coach Arun Kumar / Photo: K. Bhagya Prakash / The Hindu

They are men of extreme contrasts. J. Arun Kumar has tattoos, rides a Harley Davidson besides his other cars, is outspoken and during his playing days was a flamboyant opener. On the other end is Mansur Ali Khan, who is soft-spoken, an anachronism considering he was a medium pacer in his heydays.

But together, they have struck a wonderful tandem as coaches with the Karnataka cricket team that reaped the benefits of their expertise and won the Ranji Trophy defeating Maharashtra in the final at Hyderabad, last week.

Arun, ‘JAK’ to his friends, and Mansur, ‘MAK’ being his nickname, have had an association even during their days as key players for Karnataka. The duo shared rooms and now as coaches – Arunhandles ‘batting’ and Mansur supervises ‘bowling’ – their old rapport is very much intact while they also consciously avoid treading on each other’s toes.

The State had many heroes in batting led by K.L. Rahul (1033 runs) while Karun Nair, Robin Uthappa, Manish Pandey, Amit Verma and Ganesh Satish, all played their relevant parts. Similiarly, the bowlers too prospered and if Karnataka registered seven outright victories, it is thanks to the effort of speedster Abhimanyu Mithun (41 wickets), H.S. Sharath, skipper R. Vinay Kumar, S. Arvind and Shreyas Gopal. It would be prudent to hear from Arun and Mansur about the manner in which they extracted the best out of the team.

Jak’s prescription

Confidence the key

“At the start of the season, while we were looking at under-25 players I did look at talent, but I also wanted these players to have the necessary confidence.

I didn’t want players to step in and while facing Harbhajan Singh, think, ‘oh my god, I am playing against Harbhajan.’ I wanted the players to play their natural styles without getting overwhelmed.”

An arm around the shoulder

“The players are already under tremendous pressure and as a coach you are expected to reduce that and make them feel at ease. You cannot tell them, ‘you better get runs or get wickets’ and make them struggle even more. As a coach I had many one-on-one sessions with the players before the season and got to understand them better. I encouraged them a lot.”

A matter of trust

“When MAK and I took over last year there wasn’t much time to work on the players but this year we had time. I felt that among the players the trust-factor was not much and we worked on that, I made them enjoy each other’s success. Dropping a player is the hardest thing but we made sure that we explained to the player concerned about why he was dropped because we believed in ‘horses for courses’ and thatdetermined our team composition. Once that was made clear even the dropped players were cheering the squad from the outside and that camaraderie within the team is the biggest take-away I cherish.”

Mak’s measured words

Practice makes perfect

“Initially the bowlers were not clear in their minds and I worked on that. In the pre-season training, I made them aware of their strengths and at practise I told them to pitch it 10 feet from the batting crease and make the batsman play. I told them that if they could get it consistently there, they have more chances of getting wickets.

Mithun is an in-swing bowler and I told him to bowl four deliveries of in-swing and do a variation for the fifth – it could be a yorker, a bouncer, an away-swinger. Told him and the other fast bowlers to use the bouncer as a surprise weapon, like once in three overs and all that helped. I also used a speed-gun at training and that added more value as there was competition between the fast bowlers.”

Spinning some wickets

“The usual role of spinners is to keep it tight but I had chats with Anil Kumble and he said: ‘Even if they go for runs its okay as long as they get wickets.’ When we had sessions in the nets I made the spinners bowl 120 deliveries because in match situations they are expected to bowl 20 overs and if they could do that at training then they are well prepared and can cope with the pressure. I worked on these aspects with bowlers like Shreyas Gopal and Abrar Kazi. For instance with Shreyas, I focussed on his leg-spin and told him to give four deliveries of leg-spin per over and then work on a variation like googly in the other deliveries.”

Jak the friend

“JAK and I go a long way back. We kept it simple, he would watch the batsmen and also conduct close-in catching practice while I monitored the bowlers and also gave high-catches to fielders in the deep. I look forward to working with JAK in the coming years too.”

Kush Maini with F1 driver Jean Alesi after receiving his trophies

City boy Kush Maini became the first Indian to receive the prestigious World Series Karting (WSK) Championship awards at the WSK Gran Gala held at the Adria International Track on January 18.

The go-karting champion and his brother Arjun have been making waves on all tracks and with this win he felt on top of the world.

Kush came second in the Overall Championship in the WSK Euro series in the 60 mini category for races held at two different tracks in Italy. Competing with over 50 drivers was not easy. Kush also came third in the Overall Championship in the WSK Master series which was held across four different tracks in Italy, once again with over 50 participants from all over the world.

The Gran Gala awards were bagged by the drivers, who finished first in the top three overall Championships from all over the world in the 60 Mini, KF, KFJ, KZ2 and KZ1 series. The event was held at the Adria International Raceway in North Eastern Italy in the province of Rovigo, where several renowned people in the field of racing and karting had come together.

Jean Alesi the Formula 1 driver for Ferrari attended the ceremony and was a great motivation for all the young drivers who are making their way forward with Formula 1 as their main goal.

Kush was ecstatic on receiving both his awards and said, “I have worked very hard for many years as I started karting at the age of five and started racing the year I turned eight. After receiving several podium finishes in 2012 in Europe, I started understanding European racing and competitions and wanted to focus on the Championships in the year 2013.”

“To be at the Gran Gala was a big motivation.

I was able to pull off the win at the right time, and even though I was going through ups and downs during the season, I never lost focus. In the end, it felt great that I was the only Indian driver to have been invited to the Gran Gala function. Receiving these Championship awards has really motivated me and now that I have moved up the category to race in the KFJ this year, I will be giving it my best shot to be back at the Gran Gala this year as well,” Kush added.
