Anantha Rao B, a former national-level gymnast, is defying all odds to make a return to the sports field after being involved in an accident which left him paralysed.

Mysuru :

It’s 4 in the evening. A 30-year-old man in a wheelchair comes out of his house and takes ad 1.2 km-long ride to the nearest public park. After a 10-minute-ride, he reaches the park. His wife assists him by locking the wheelchair brakes, moving the footrests out of the way of his feet and putting the armrest on the side. He then takes out a wooden club from his bag and throws it from the sitting position. His wife picks it up and gives it back to him. He again makes the farthest throw…

Anantha Rao B, a former national-level gymnast, is defying all odds to make a return to the sports field after being involved in an accident which left him paralysed.  He has bagged over 100 medals at the state, south zone and National level gymnastic events. In  2010, while he was doing a somersault at the Mysuru Dasara games,  he landed on his neck which injured his spinal cord and made him immobile.

Nine years after this incident, he is now trying to achieve something in the field of Para Sports. He is preparing to compete in the Club throw — a sport which is currently practised only by athletes with disabilities.Following the tragic incident in 2010, doctors found that Anantha’s spine was shattered. He underwent treatment in a hospital for nearly two years but showed no improvement. That’s when the doctors of HCG Foundation came to his rescue. In an attempt to regenerate the  cells in his spinal cord, a team led by Dr Ajay Kumar gave Ananth stem cell therapy and injections.

This helped him sit – he was bedridden for two years. In 2014,  he approached Ayurvedic therapist Chandraprabha who suggested new treatments.  They both fell in love and got married.  Chandraprabha became his support system. Anantha who always kept himself busy in the sports field was missing something and he became interested in video editing, VFX making. He spent hours browsing and watching video tutorials on VFX and started acquiring editing skills.

During this period he browsed about various para-athletes, their achievements and how they set their goals. He then became determined to pursue sports and shine. In the meantime, Satyanarayana, National Para Athletics coach,  appealed to him to take part in a Para Sports event like Club throw.

Ananth, who was not ready to let fate have the final say, started learning the skills of Club throw. Over the past one year, he has been practising this track and field event. To improve his throwing skills, he ordered a wooden club, weighing around 400 gm,  from the United Kingdom as they are not found in India. Every day he and his wife visit the nearby park, spend an hour practising the Club throw. His wife helps in getting his throw measures and picks up the club and gives it back to him.

When he initially started throwing clubs he could throw it to a distance  of just 9.75 m. But after a few months of practice, he can throw up to 16 m. Last year, he participated in the 18th National Para Athletics championship held in Haryana. Though he did not bag a medal, it gave him a great learning experience, he says. He is hoping to participate in an international Para Sports event this year.

Anantha’s wife Chandraprabha says, “He has the passion for the sports. I can sense the improvements in his throw and there is a meteoric rise compared to his initial days. He  possesses great confidence. What he needs now is a good trainer and coach who can train him and suggest some good techniques.”

FINANCIAL CRUNCH Anantha receives
Rs 3,000 as pension from the government. His father, an auto driver who stood by him,  passed away three years ago. Though a few individuals and organisations had provided funds in the past, he needs financial support to continue his passion.

Players put best foot forward at first edition of K’taka Women’s League

Bengaluru :

Some are students, some have jobs, while some are still finding a way to live their life. A few are from affluent families, whereas some come from humble backgrounds. Others even had to fight with their families to play a boys’ sport. But all those women from different walks of life had walked side by side for over a month in successfully conducting the inaugural edition of the Karnataka State Football Association (KSFA) Women’s League – Super Division.

With the All India Football Federation (AIFF) making it mandatory for clubs to play in the state league to enter the Indian Women’s League (IWL), KSFA conducted the league and passed with flying colours. On Wednesday, the six-team league came to a conclusion with Bangalore United FC clinching the title.
“People may think getting women’s teams together to play a league is a huge task, but we actually had no trouble finding them. There were huge interests among the clubs to field a team in the women’s league. In the upcoming days, we will have a lower division similar to the men’s league,” said Shaona Sen, League Secretary.

The champions, who maintained an all-win record, also booked a place in the IWL’s next edition. The KSFA is also in talks with the AIFF for the entry of an additional team. BUFC head coach Chitra Gangadharan, the only woman in the state to have an Asian Football Confederation (AFC) ‘A’ coaching licence, was delighted at the progress. The former India skipper had fought a lone battle in providing recognition to women’s football in the state. “With a recognised league, girls can share the same stadium every week. It gives them a regular platform and a chance to pursue the sport professionally.

We also had players from neighbouring states. So, that’s good for the competition within a team,” said Gangadharan.
However, as BUFC sort of disseminated other teams in their way to the title, scoring 3.8 goals every match on average while conceding just one, it questions the competition in the league and readiness of Gangadharan’s team. “We didn’t have great competition in the league. Now, the real challenge will begin, as IWL has mostly international players. We will begin preparations shortly,” she said.

U-17 football World Cup star chasing his dream to play in Europe

Sanjeev Stalin assisted Jeakson Singh for India’s only goal in a FIFA World Cup (U-17) against Colombia in New Delhi in October 2017.

Bengaluru :

Not everyone fulfils their dream of playing professional football. Stalin too had to be satisfied with amateur football with the Aeronautical Development Establishment. But he and his wife Parameshwari, who were running a small roadside garment shop in Bengaluru, were determined to make their son Sanjeev a professional footballer.

They gambled everything on their 10-year-old son, sending him to Chandigarh Football Academy. Little did they know that their son would script history for India seven years later. Sanjeev Stalin assisted Jeakson Singh for India’s only goal in a FIFA World Cup (U-17) against Colombia in New Delhi in October 2017.

The 18-year-old has come a long way since then. He is an integral part of Indian Arrows squad (All India Football Federation’s developmental team) which helped him support his family. While he is fulfilling his father’s dream, the boy refuses to let success get to his head.

“Playing for India was a dream come true. All the sacrifices my parents made, paid off. It is an experience which will always stay with me. I’m thankful to my parents who made the tough choice of sending me away. It helped change the situation in my family. I could help my parents with money,” he added. In his second season with the Arrows, the left-back is making a transition to a winger. Despite the limited opportunities he is getting, he is pushing his limits to play better.

“People say U-17 WC was the best achievement. But it isn’t everything. I’ve just begun. It was initially difficult to play against experienced players in the I-League. They were older and better than us. I had to adapt to that. It’s been a great learning opportunity. Thanks to all the coaches, especially Nicolai Adam (former India U-17 coach), who gave me the confidence,” said one of the only three footballers from Karnataka playing in the top divisions (I-League and Indian Super League) of India currently.

His coach at the Arrows, Floyd Pinto, is also impressed with his commitments. “Sanjeev has been brilliant so far this season. He is the one who has the capability of dribbling and opening up defences. He can assist and score goals. That’s the role we want to see him in,” Pinto said. But Sanjeev is not swayed by glitzy lifestyle. He wants to grow as a footballer and play in Europe. “I have so many dreams, so many targets. But for now, I want to keep my family happy, play best to my abilities and leave the rest to God,” he said.

Kohli and Bumrah share the Sportsman of the Year (cricket) accolade

Prakash Padukone was honoured for Lifetime Achievement while Virat Kohli and Jasprit Bumrah shared the Sportsman of the Year (cricket) accolade at the Sportstar Aces Awards ceremony at the Taj Mahal Palace here on Thursday. It was to warm, heartfelt applause that Padukone received his award, before an audience of stars on a grand evening.

“This is an absolute fanboy moment,” confessed Sunil Gavaskar, chairman of the Awards jury, as he feted Padukone on stage. “For me you’re the greatest Indian sportsman ever. You paved the way for the badminton generation we now see.”

Padukone, while being typically self-effacing, hailed the growth of Indian badminton. “I don’t think I deserve that much of praise. There are so many who’ve done so well. But I accept the award with all humility,” he said, before he was joined on stage by wife Ujjala, daughter Deepika and son-in-law Ranveer Singh.

“Around 10-15 years ago, Indian players would look at the draw for major tournaments and worry about facing the Chinese and Indonesians. Today, it’s the other way around.”

The Sportstar Aces Awards, supported by the Qatar Supreme Committee for Delivery and Legacy for the 2022 FIFA World Cup and MRF, recognised the wonderful sporting year Kohli and Bumrah had enjoyed.

“As a child, I used to buy Sportstar every month for the posters. So, getting this award from Sportstar is like reviving childhood memories,” said Kohli as he received his award, in absentia, from Shane Warne.

The former Australian leg-spinner and Rajasthan Royals brand ambassador hailed the fact that Kohli placed primacy on Test cricket. “Virat is a very inspiring cricketer all around the world. He stands up for what he believes in and speaks his heart,” he added.

It was a golden 2018 for Bumrah, Ishant Sharma and Mohammed Shami, who became the most successful pace trio in a calendar year in Test cricket.

“That an Indian pace trio broke the record of the great West Indies pacers is a very proud thing for us,” said Bumrah. “We wanted to win abroad. For that, you have to have a good bowling attack.”

The Awards, which were previously held between 1994 and 2003 in their first avatar, were revived as Sportstar completed 40 years in 2018.

Alongside Gavaskar on the Awards jury were sporting legends M.M. Somaya, Anju Bobby George, Anjali Bhagwat, and N. Ram, Chairman, The Hindu Group of Publishing.

Cheteshwar Pujara became the first recipient of the Chairman’s Choice award, for his exploits in a historic Test series win for India in Australia. “Pujara is the last of a dwindling tribe of pure Test batsmen,” said Ram.

“He has shown that he has all the credentials to step into Rahul Dravid’s shoes.”

Pujara spoke of his parents’ role in moulding his life. “I lost my mother to cancer at 17. When I was young, she told me, ‘You’ll have a great career but it’s important to be a nice human being. It hardly matters whether you are famous or not.’

“My father has been a strict coach; but I’m grateful he has been there for me.”

Sunil Chhetri, P.V. Sindhu, Neeraj Chopra, Mary Kom, Hima Das, Smriti Mandhana, Sharath Kamal, Bajrang Punia, Manu Bhaker and Deepa Malik were some of the other awardees on the occasion, an event graced by sporting greats of the likes of Viswanathan Anand, Gagan Narang, Mithali Raj and Kamlesh Mehta, and Odisha Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik, whose State was declared the best for promotion of sports.”

Ayon Sengupta, Editor, Sportstar, welcomed the awardees while N. Murali, Chairman, KSL, also addressed the gathering.

The Hindu’s Editor Mr. Mukund Padmanabhan was also present.

New kid on the block shines bright among Karnataka youngsters

All eyes are on the next generation of the Karnataka cricketers who will get a chance to play first-class cricket.

DevduttBF11feb2019

Bengaluru :

All eyes are on the next generation of the Karnataka cricketers who will get a chance to play first-class cricket. The Karnataka State Cricket Association (KSCA) selection committee handed debut offers to eight players in the Ranji Trophy this season. And among them, one youngster who shone was 18-year-old Devdutt Padikkal. The U-19 India opener was an instant hit, scoring 77 on his first-class debut against Maharashtra.

The left-hander has seen a meteoric rise in his stocks after playing a fantastic 208-run knock against Assam in the Cooch Behar Trophy in 2017. His impressive numbers in that season, where he scored 829 runs at an average of 82.9, and his exploits with India U-19 team in the Sri Lanka tour (153 runs in five innings) and Asia Cup U-19 (152 in 3) were enough to convince Karnataka selectors. Padikkal even played a few good knocks in the Karnataka Premier League (KPL playing for Ballari Tuskers. In his rookie Ranji season, the Edapal, Kerala-born batsman has tallied 258 runs in 10 innings, including three half-centuries.

“I had expected the call-up as I played a few good innings in the India U-19. It happened at the right moment for me. While I’m happy to have helped the team, I’m not satisfied with the scores. I think I could have done better,” he said.

The Bengaluru-boy, who moved to the city at the age of 11 to pursue cricket, has matured a lot. Unlike his aggressive style of batting in the U-19 setup, the youngster has learnt to be patient in testing first-class cricket, respecting bowlers’ might. He proved that on a seaming track of Shivamogga, scoring 75 at a snail pace against Railways in the Ranji Trophy.

“Bowlers are more experienced and that tests your skills as a batsman. It’s not very easy to play against them,” said Padikkal. Padikkal is working on polishing his skills with his coach Irfan Sait. The opener has already bagged an Indian Premier League (IPL) contract with Royal Challengers Bangalore. And despite the little chances of making his debut in the cash-rich league, he wants to utilise the platform to improve his skills.
“I have been working on my power hitting to play those big shots. Hopefully, in the IPL camp, I will be able to do that under Gary (Kirsten),” he said.

1,235 of them pedal a 4-km stretch in a single line

As the nation celebrated the 70th Republic Day, hundreds of cyclists from across the country landed in Hubballi to pedal 4 km in a single line to set a new Guinness record and make the country proud.

In all, 1,500 cyclists from places such as Delhi, Jammu and Kashmir, Maharashtra, Goa and Karnataka congregated in Hubballi on Saturday for the attempt. Finally, 1,235 of them made it to the Guinness World Records for “the longest single line bicycles parade”

The earlier record was in the name of Bangladesh, where 1,186 cyclists had pedalled in a single line for 3.2 km in 2016. Hubballi Bicycle Club (HBC), in association with cyclists from across the country and various organisations, had been planning meticulously for the last six months for the attempt and they succeeded on Saturday evening.

Official adjudicator of Guinness World Records Swapnil Dangarikar announced that a new record had been created and handed over the certificate to president of the HBC Shrikant Deshpande and other office-bearers as the cyclists and a large number of people cheered and applauded.

Although the record attempt began in the afternoon with 1,500 cyclists above the age of 15, the first attempt failed as the requisite distance between cyclists and speed was not maintained. Subsequently, several cyclists were dropped and the record attempt began with 1,235 cyclists, who then pedalled to glory by cycling the 4-km stretch between Oxford College on the outskirts of Hubballi to Kusugal on National Highway 218.

The record attempt was part of the Cyclotsava organised to mark the Republic Day with the message ‘Respect cyclists’. It was also aimed at creating awareness on the benefits of cycling on personal health and in reducing carbon footprint.

Bengaluru climber scales new heights

While many of his age would be happy to play various sports for fun, climbing meant serious business for Pereira from an early age.

BharathPereiraBF15jan2019

Bengaluru  :

Cricket rules the roost in India, and sports such as football and hockey come second in the country. One can only imagine the scenario for climbing; few know about the discipline, which has found its way into the upcoming 2020 Tokyo Olympics. But Bengaluru’s Bharath Pereira is proud he chose the sport when he was as young as five years old.

“I’m happy I took up a niche sport because when I win something, it’s humbling that people do not know much about it. As a kid, success in cricket or football would have made me arrogant,” Pereira said.

While many of his age would be happy to play various sports for fun, climbing meant serious business for Pereira from an early age. In his maiden try at the climbing wall in Kanteerava Stadium, people present there were surprised with the natural talent he possessed and the child in him was overjoyed at the adulation he got, leading him to fall in love with the sport. A lot of hard work went into becoming one of the best in the country and his coach Keerthi Pais played a big role in shaping his skills.

“I would get a lot of attention when I climbed the wall at Kanteerava Stadium. Back then, there weren’t many young climbers like me. I then began to compete with people older than me, against climbers who were 10 years old. It felt good to climb well and get respect for the same,” said the now 18-year-old.

The climber won several gold medals during his junior national days and two gold and one silver at his senior nationals debut in 2017. Despite the jump (from junior to senior) in standards, Pereira showed that he belonged to the top league and considers his debut success to be one of his best memories in the sport so far.

Pereira has already represented India at the Asian Games last year and the Youth Olympics as well. These are great achievements for the youngster, but he understands the need to attain greater heights to bring laurels for the country.  As of now, his focus is primarily on the senior nationals scheduled later this month. But, he has set his sights on some international competitions that will act as Olympic qualifiers as well.

“Every athlete wants to be at the Olympics and I also want to represent India. However, the chances of me being there are slim, but I will still try my best to feature in Olympic qualifying events this year,” said Pereira.

Two Bengaluru teenagers dribble their way to national football scene

Vishnu Sunil (extreme right)
Vishnu Sunil (extreme right)

Bengaluru :

Karnataka’s representation in the top two national football leagues (I-League and ISL) has been scarce in recent times. Two Bengaluru boys, however, are dreaming of changing the scene in near future. Vishnu Sunil and Hrishikesh Sanadhi were recently called up for the U-15 National Team high-performance programme underway in Odisha.

“The camp is really challenging. It was difficult to adjust to the conditions initially as the level and tempo of the training were very high. But we got adjusted slowly,” Sunil said.

The six-feet tall centre-back defenders from Bangalore Youth Football League (BYFL) academy are not regular kids jostling on a football pitch to have fun. The 15-year-olds are as serious as professional footballers donning the national jersey. When boys of their age go out and binge on junk food, they stick to dietary plans made by the academy nutritionist. “We avoid eating outside and even if we do, we work out in the gym or on the pitch to burn those calories. Staying fit is important for footballers and we are serious about that,” said Sanadhi.

Both Sunil and Sanadhi have had overseas exposure. Their fathers’ job profiles helped them get international experience at an early age. Sunil started training in China and represented his school team till he turned 12, before moving to Nigeria where he played in the West African International School’s Athletic League. Sanadhi, similarly, started playing in Belgium in 2010 and got selected for Football Academy Royal Racing Club, Etterbeek for the 2013-14 season. Back in Bengaluru, they joined BYFL academy and have impressed their coach Salim Pathan since.

“Vishnu is a well-disciplined boy. He is getting matured as a centre-back. He is very effective in aerial balls and is good in tackling. He has an eye for goal and has scored many goals in free-kicks. He has a good future as a leader of the team,” Pathan said. “Hrishikesh is very good technically. He reads the game very well and final tackle is his speciality. He has a good passing ability with aerial and ground balls.”

Despite praise from their coach, both the boys are grounded. The fans of Real Madrid and Spain centre-back Sergio Ramos aim to become professional footballers in future and being in the U-15 National Team high-performance programme, they are aware of the hard work they have to put in every day, without hampering their studies.

Thus, they are mastering time management skills to stay ahead of their peer group. “Although professional football is our target, it’s also important to study. It takes me around three hours to return home from the training ground and I utilise that time to prepare my homework and study,” said Sanadhi, a class 10 student. Both will be playing for BYFL U-15 team in the upcoming Junior League.
