Jayaram conquers doubts after surgery to win Dutch Open

Ajay Jayaram
Ajay Jayaram

For a long time, Ajay Jayaram was known for losing out on an Olympic berth to Parupalli Kashyap during the 2012 India Open. It seemed as if Jayaram had all but sealed the spot with some good performances round the year, but Kashyap pipped him courtesy a lucky break as the then World No. 4 Chen Jin gave the latter a walkover in the quarter-finals that eventually proved decisive.

Jayaram was crestfallen and since then has been trying hard to bounce back. He enjoyed a decent run but not as much he would have liked. To add to his woes, a shoulder injury during the Hong Kong Open in January this year put him out of action for more than six months.

Jayaram underwent a surgery and did the necessary rehabilitation. But at only his fourth tournament back, the Mumbai shuttler won the biggest event of his career when he clinched the Dutch Open Grand Prix on Sunday.

“Definitely it has surprised me. I played some good attacking badminton. I need to maintain this level of focus and discipline in the coming tournaments. That will be the key to getting good results,” Jayaram told MAIL TODAY.

“I am elated. It has been a tough few months. Even after I resumed playing, it wasn’t easy to find my rhythm. It took me a while to get back the match temperament and touch. But I am happy I managed to dig deep and get the muchneeded win which also happens to be my first Grand Prix title. I couldn’t have asked for a better comeback,” he said.

The manner of his win, coming against a tough field, should give Jayaram immense confidence. Beating the likes of third seed Dionysius Hayom Rumbaka (World No. 26) of Indonesia and top seed Rajiv Ouseph (World No. 29) of England would do him a world of good.

“With higher-ranked players like Ouseph and Rumbaka in my half, it wasn’t going to be easy. I secured convincing wins against both. The final was against an upcoming Indonesian (Ihsan Maulana Mustofa). It was a hard fought five-game battle which swung both ways. I had to dig deep and bring all my focus into play in the fifth game where I was 1-5 down. But I played well and was positive when it mattered.”

Coming back from the shoulder injury was never going to be easy and Jayaram admitted that he was often frustrated. “The first few tournaments were quite hard to adapt to. But I knew it was a matter of perseverance. There were trying moments when frustration set in. But I had to keep my chin up and keep working.” Now Jayaram has got a feel of the new scoring system that is being introduced at the Grand Prix level on an experimental basis. The 11-points best-of-five games scoring format has been criticised by many top players. “Although the game gets shorter, most of the match is played under more pressure which requires more focus. Hard to say if it is the way to go for badminton, but I’m glad I was able to adjust to it and do well.” Jayaram, who was ranked as high as 21st in early 2013, has now fallen to 66th, and with many Indian players going past him, he was not part of the Asian Games squad. Getting back to the national team is his priority.

“If I am able to maintain the same positive tempo, I’m sure I will regain my place in the core group,” he said.

Irresistible charm of Yezdi bikes

MOTORBIKE CLUB

Superbikes and classy Royal Enfields are luring youngsters and young professionals.

But a distinctive motorbike group is trying to popularise the country-made Yezdi and Jawa bikes. No longer being manufactured, these bikes are more like a vintage item. Therefore, in an attempt to bring owners of these bikes together, Gursaurabh Singh started the ‘Yezdi and Jawa Club’ five years ago.

“Initially we were not active on the social networking sites. It was three years back when we started our page on Facebook to get connected to a maximum number of people,” says Singh, who started the group along with his avid-biker cousin Inderjeet Singh.

“At that time we were the only members. Gradually the number increased to five and now there are a 100 Yezdi and Jawa owners who are a part of this group.”The group expanded when Singh used to takehis 1978 model for maintenance at a local mechanic shop in Rajouri Garden.

“Mechanics did their role in giving strength to this group. They mentioned about the club to other people and they approached us. Now, every week atleast two to three people approach us for joining this club.”

As the number is increasing so are the rides and meetings. Considering the fact the bike does not give mileage like any other superbike, the group prefers not to take off on any long distance ride. “We have been to Alwar, Jaipur, Chandigarh, Ludhiana and Nainital, besides doing rounds within the City,” says Singh.

Given that the maintenance of the bike is a costly affair, most of the owners are extra careful about its upkeep and health. Says Singh, “If we run the bike for 10,000 kilometres we have to pay just the double of it as maintenance. Also, there are some parts which are not available in the market. For this we have to ask the mechanic to especially make it or procure it. Even some parts which are still available can be availed from only limited shops in the city.”

Thirty-year-old Singh, who is the proud owner of Yezdi, loves the motorbike for its looks. “It has got a unique identity. Even the ‘vroom’ of this bike is distinctive. It forces people to turn around and give it more than a second look. I bought my bike from my neighbour in 2001 and since then I am taking care of it.”

But the young biker reveals a fondness for the 1964 model, which is the oldest model of the bike in the club. “It was imported from Czechoslovakia at that time. It is beautiful,” says Singh.

In search of glory

TALENT AND DEDICATION Key to success. Photo: G.P. Sampath Kumar / The Hindu
TALENT AND DEDICATION Key to success. Photo: G.P. Sampath Kumar / The Hindu

With his increasingly impressive performances in long jump and the 100m, S. Lokesh is an athlete to watch out for

It is not easy for an athlete to succeed at the highest levels both on the track and in the field. “Carl Lewis did it,” smiles the Indian Athletics Academy’s coach, C. Muralidharan. “Then again, he was Carl Lewis.” As far as role models go, S. Lokesh can choose no better than King Carl.

A young long jumper and sprinter at the Academy, Lokesh brightened his already-impressive CV with gold medals in both events at last month’s State Junior Athletics Championships.

On the face of it, and compared against the raft of records that tumbled at the meet, his feats may not appear eye-catching.

But at 14 years and nine months, and still in his first season in the under-16 age-group, Lokesh stood head and shoulders above his mostly-older rivals.

He leapt a distance of 6.71m in long jump, before clocking 11s flat in the 100m dash, winning both convincingly.

“I don’t think about my competitors,” says Lokesh. “My only goal is to improve on my previous performance.”

It is an approach that appears to have served him well. Last August, Lokesh drew attention in Karnataka’s athletics circles after he broke the under-14 boys’ long jump record at the state meet in Shimoga with a distance of 5.90m.

At the Junior Nationals only a couple of months later, he grabbed a bronze with an effort of 6.14, and made the final of the 100m with a time of 11.91.

In themselves, his performances are impressive; but equally significant has been his sharp progress.

In little over a year, Lokesh has sliced nine-tenths of a second off his 100m time and added eight-tenths of a metre to his leap in the long jump.

Such improvement may not be uncommon at his age, but at a height of 5’11”, he is a hugely exciting prospect.

“I expect to see him at the international level in two years’ time,” says Muralidharan.

“He has the talent, but he also has the dedication. He is fully focused on what has to be done.”

It helps that Lokesh hails from a family of sportsmen. His father, L. Sathyanathan, is a wing-back for Bangalore Reds in the State ‘C’ division football league. Sathyanathan’s brother, L. Kantharaj, and father, K. Loganathan, were also footballers. Lokesh took up competitive athletics inspired by his cousin,

A. Lokeswaran, a 400m runner. “I used to ask him what the 100m was, what the 200m was, and how the hurdles were won. I decided I wanted to be like him,” he says.

Sathyanathan admits that his son, a class 10 student at Sacred Heart Boys High School, has taken even his parents by surprise.

“I could see that he had the attitude and the will-power. But he has surpassed my expectations,” he says. “All this has been possible, though, only because of the support from people around us. I’ve been a driver for 18 years and my sister has helped me all along. The Shanthinagar MLA, N.A. Haris, has also been very kind to us.”

Sathynathan dreams that his son will make it to the Olympics one day, although he insists that there is no burden of expectation on the boy. “If he has a bad day at a competition, we don’t bring it up at home,” he says. “We don’t force him to do anything.”

For now, Lokesh’s sights are fixed on the targets his coach has set for him: 7m and 10.7s next summer.

The South Zone championships, which begin in Hyderabad next week, will prove a strong test of his mettle. “I know how what my goals are,” Lokesh states. “I will work towards them every day.”
