Award-winning cadet: NCC not just about march-past

Bengaluru :

He had to struggle a bit to find his way into Bengaluru’s National Cadet Corps (NCC) group, but it was worth a try. From winning the Prime Minister’s coveted baton to represent India at the youth exchange programme in Kazakhstan, Cadet Adithya SP proved wrong the assumption that NCC is “just about march-past”.

For Adithya from Shivamogga, taking part in the Republic Day Camp (RDC) held in Delhi has been a long cherished dream and emerging as the All India Best Cadet was icing on the cake.

Currently pursuing Bachelor of Science at Christ University, Adithya said: “There were some issues because of which I couldn’t join the NCC group at Christ University. But that didn’t stop them from supporting me while I was getting training at the Jalahalli camp.”

After joining the No. 2 Karnataka Air Squadron camp in 2014, he pursued his passion to be in the Indian Armed Forces. The selection camp for the RDC was in 2015 September.

With this year’s contingent all set to travel to Delhi for the camp, Adithya recalled that the last year’s camp—being the commander for the All India Air Force contingent at the guard of honour (parade) and mastering skills in dancing and extempore— was not a cakewalk. Competing with equally tough cadets from six other groups in the Karnataka-Goa NCC directorate and winning the gold medal at his very first step was a thrilling experience, he said.
Last title was in 2006

The title got the Air Wing contingent a gold medal and Adithya was awarded a trophy by the Air Chief Marshal.Cadets from Karnataka had won the title previously in 1997 and in 2006.

“My mother was very proud of me though she couldn’t come to Delhi. It was the collective effort of all training officers. My seniors and officers who train us inspired me to join the defence. Not everyone can be forced into joining the armed forces. If everything goes well, I will soon be training with the Air Force,” said Adithya who is also a cycling enthusiast.

Lesson from Kazakhstan

In May, this year, Adithya and 11 others represented India at the Youth Exchange Programme in Kazakhstan. “Every boy there has to serve in their Army for at least a year. They are all nurtured in that way. Most people of my age think that NCC is all about march-past and drills. But actually it is preparing us for a respectable future,” Adithya said.

Sporting a crisp blue coat, cream trousers and a champion’s smile, Peter England Mr India World 2016 Vishnuraj S Menon looked the part for his homecoming to Bengaluru after having won the pageant.

Sporting a crisp blue coat, cream trousers and a champion’s smile, Peter England Mr India World  2016  Vishnuraj S Menon looked the part for his homecoming to Bengaluru after having won the pageant. Awaiting his arrival outside the airport were his parents and elder brother, who had travelled from his hometown of Thrissur just to welcome and congratulate him, his close set of college friends and the media. Upon seeing his inner circle on arrival, the reigning Peter England Mr India  World 2016 let out a victory scream. He then let his emotional side get the better of him, tearing up after he embraced his parents warmly. His friends expressed their joy for his victory by hoisting him on to their shoulders and carrying him out of the airport.

Following this, Vishnuraj and team left for his residence in Whitefield, where an even grander welcome awaited him. His house was decorated colourfully, and delicious chocolate cake was presented for him to cut. Once they were rested, they headed to his college MVJ College of Engineering , where he was welcomed by loud cheers from his juniors. He then took a trip down memory lane, visiting his classes and favourite hangout spots in the college. The college then felicitated Vishnuraj, following which he shared some interesting snippets from his college life and his journey from a college student to a pageant winner.

The day could not be complete without the hunk visiting one of his most favourite place in the city — his gym. Vishnuraj and his friends, who are also his workout buddies, visited two gyms — one that he regularly works outs at, and the other a new one run by his trainer. At both the places, he showed off his grueling routine and ripped muscles. “I spend a lot of time at the gym, and especially love working out my chest and biceps. It’s rare that I miss my gym days, and that’s something I’m proud of,” he says.

For the love of the game

From the albums

drkrishnamurthybf01dec2016

Karnataka has the rare privilege of playing the first Ranji Trophy match in India in November 1934. That match also turned out to be a good one, with 30 wickets falling in one day and Mysore losing the match to Madras in a single day.

Karnataka has come a long way in Indian cricket and is now acknowledged as one of the most powerful cricket teams, one feared by all opponents. Many have contributed to this transformation — players, administrators, the cricket-loving public and employees of the cricket association.

It has been a long and difficult journey that I am happy to have been a part of, first as a player and then as an administrator.

It started in 1959, when I was chosen to play for a junior match between Mysore and Madras and a brilliant century in that match made it easy for me to get into the Ranji Trophy side and stay there for 10 long years before retiring. After a few years’ break, I entered Karnataka State Cricket Association (KSCA) as an administrator and worked to the best of my ability in various capacities. I retired a few years ago as the vice-president of KSCA.

Today, it is a well-run organisation, with set rules, a beautiful stadium, fabulous clubhouse and more than 3,000 members enjoying the facilities and the game of cricket frequently.

But it was a difficult journey then, with no ground that the association could call its own. The Central College grounds were used as the headquarters and games were also played at various other college and school grounds.

With no money to run cricket matches and expecting everyone to do a good job, the president and the secretary had a hard time running KSCA. S A Srinivasan, M Chinnaswamy, Captain Thimmappiah and C Nagaraj were the stalwarts who built the infrastructure for the present-day KSCA.

The presidents and secretaries sacrificed their personal lives and professions to spend time on the cricket grounds. Even in such difficult situations, KSCA magnanimously contributed to the various causes of the state. This rare photograph was taken on one such occasion for the Chief Minister’s Flood Relief Fund that was organised at the Central College grounds.

The then Ranji Trophy players played in several places like Tumkur, Shimoga and Kolar and raised funds for the cause. Many stalwarts seen in this photograph have left for their heavenly abode while many others have been forgotten. But a few are still active and working for the cause of cricket.

While I was playing for the Ranji Trophy, I was also picked to represent the Mysore University cricket team. Only two universities existed then — Mysore and Karnataka, headquartered in the Hubballi/Dharwad region. Mysore University consisted of all colleges in the old Mysore area.
I was a student of Bangalore Medical College and represented the university for four consecutive years. During the last two, I was the captain. We always had an excellent team and in 1962, we won the All-India Championship for Rohinton Baria Trophy, playing in the biting cold of Kanpur (two degree centigrade).

Almost everyone on those teams went on to play for the Ranji Trophy. I was also fortunate to be selected for the All-India University team against the visiting Australian cricket team, led by late Richi Benaud.
Two of my teammates P R Ashok Anand (present president of KSCA) and Deepak Das Gupta also played in that match.

Deepak Das Gupta was a fine off-spinner and has now settled down in Kolkata. Nearly all the players went on to become highly-qualified professionals in India and abroad and have done well in their respective spheres.

I was also fairly successful in the Ranji Trophy matches, becoming the captain of the Karnataka cricket team and scoring over 1,000 runs which was an achievement in those days.
As the players were not paid in those days, a majority retired early to pursue their chosen professions. I also retired early to take up my medical practice.

Today, university cricket has lost its stature with too many universities and with cricket becoming professionalised. I feel fortunate to have been among the few who savoured the true spirit of the game, surrounded by so many wonderful players.

‘First step towards developing a wheelchair circuit ’

Rohan Bopanna speaks at the launch of Indian Wheelchair Tennis Tour’s Tabebuia Open in Bengaluru on Tuesday, along side Sunil Jain, founder-trustee of ASTHA.
Rohan Bopanna speaks at the launch of Indian Wheelchair Tennis Tour’s Tabebuia Open in Bengaluru on Tuesday, along side Sunil Jain, founder-trustee of ASTHA.

India’s doubles star Rohan Bopanna exuded hope that India would one day have players competing in wheelchair tennis at Grand Slams.

Speaking on Tuesday at the launch of the Indian Wheelchair Tennis Tour’s (IWTT) Tabebuia Open, a national-level wheelchair tournament to be held at the KSLTA courts from December 2 to 4, Bopanna said that the differently-abled athletes were inferior to none.

“Wheel-chair tennis isn’t any different. For example, at premier tournaments we all share the same locker room. We are all equal,” Bopanna said.

“So it’s fantastic to see a tournament, which will help the players at the grassroots, happening here.”

The event will also mark the first time a wheel-chair event is being recognised by the AITA. Players will now be registered with the AITA and eligible for a ranking.

‘Hopefully, more to come’

“This is the first step towards developing a circuit,” said Sunil Jain, founder trustee of ASTHA, an NGO working for the uplift of the differently-abled, of which IWTT is a division.

“These athletes need a platform to build professionalism. It’s also about changing people’s perceptions through excellence. I hope this is the beginning of things to come.”

K. Gopinath, an international-level player, said that this would provide a better stage for the athletes to showcase their skills.

“We have been competing for quite a while,” he said. “But we do need some transformation. We don’t need sympathy. We just need opportunities. So we are all happy with this.”

The event will disburse in total Rs. 2.5 lakh as prize money.

In all, it will see close to 40 players competing in both singles and doubles.

Also on the occasion, KSLTA’s joint-secretary P.R. Ramaswamy, announced a National-level wheelchair tennis tournament in the near future.

It would be sponsored by a prominent India player, he said, but refused to divulge further details.

CABI names Dravid as brand ambassador

Former India captain Rahul Dravid
Former India captain Rahul Dravid

Bengaluru :

The Cricket Association for the Blind in India (CABI) on Wednesday announced former India captain Rahul Dravid as the brand ambassador for the T20 World Cup for the Blind to be held in India from January 31 to February 12.

Dravid promised to inspire visually impaired cricketers and promote blind cricket. “Growth of cricket for the blind in India and in the world will encourage people with special needs to trust in their abilities and unleash their true potential,” said Dravid, who is currently the coach of the India U-19 and India ‘A’ teams. While talking about the challenges in blind cricket, Dravid recalled his experience of playing blindfold cricket during IPL team Delhi Daredevils’ training session. “We found it challenging. I had to back away. It’s very difficult to counter the fear playing blindfold. What is inspiring about blind cricketers is their motivation to challenge their disability,” he said. Dravid also praised CABI for developing the sport by conducting domestic and international tournaments. The former India captain launched CABI’s ‘Support Blind Cricket by buying a ball’ campaign to raise funds for the tournament.

Meanwhile, CABI president GK Mahantesh said: “Dravid’s presence and encouragement will motivate thousands of youths to pursue the sport. It’s an honour to have Dravid as supporter of blind cricket.” The 13-day bash will be held in eight venues across the country with the final in Bengaluru on February 12. Besides India, the other teams in the fray are Australia, Bangladesh, England, Nepal, New Zealand, Pakistan, South Africa, Sri Lanka and the West Indies. “We have planned a few friendly matches in Jammu and Kashmir to promote peace and harmony in the valley,” Mahantesh said.

Financial grant

The Board of Control for Cricket in India  (BCCI) has promised financial grant to CABI, said Mahantesh. “Earlier this year the BCCI president wrote to CABI saying that the cricket board was willing to support it financially from this year. The amount has not been finalised,” Mahantesh said. He also said that CABI was making all possible attempts to get affiliation from the BCCI.
